My birds :gcc: :cockatoo: :monk: Loves, oatmeal, brocoli, carrots, sweet patatoes and many more. I try to give them Healthy food and not junk ect.. MY cockatoos last owner was giving her tons of crackers ect.. NOt good. When she moved in with me I changed it to pellets and not seeds and tons of fruits and veggies. All my birds came from unwanted homes.

Nada. Nuthin'. Never. Ditto for cherries, grapes and nectarines. And greens? Forget about it. But, I AM persistent, and I WILL keep on tryin'.

The ONLY thing they DID eat one day, on a one-shot-only deal, was some cooked chicken. They scoffed it up like there was no tomorrow. The second time I tried to give 'em some, they just laughed at me.

How such a small creature can make such a big human feel so stupid is beyond ME :-)

Hi,

My birds gets a lot of difrent stuff. The bas is pellets, Versele Laga Nutribird. Seed (small amount)are given in toys that they must work to get. Every 2 - 3 days, they get extra sprouts of many different kinds, whit a mix of diffrent vegetables, some (not often) fruit, and some berries.

A use Cos lettuces, that contains more nutrition that the iceberg lettuce (only water).
Chard, Parsley (only little), dill, mitzuna, tatsoi, and other dark green leavs.
Vegetables are better for birds than fruit and berries.

Red Peppers and carrots are very god to give because they contains a lot of beta carotene (and a lot of other vegetables), that in the body becomes A-vitamin. Many birds have a A-vitamin deficiency. Especially Amazons.

Very best regards

A very good point. I forgot to mention it.

I also serve organic vegetables to my birds. (With some exceptions)

Most we grow on the farm, so my chili pepper is no toxic on.

Burt almost everything you buy is some toxic on, some more than other. Potato, strawberry, banana, is also some of the worst.

OT
The cotton farms stands for 25% of all use of toxic, in plant growing around the world. Some toxics that were used a lang time ago, still remains in the soil, and will do so for many years to come.

Why are citrus fruits bad for parrots? Too acidic?

The only food that I've ever noticed my red-rumped parrot react to badly is cilantro (coriander): very dilated pupils, tachycardia and of course panic at his own physiological reaction. He still rushes towards the stuff like a cat to catnip but NEVER AGAIN!

He has a similar aptitude for sniffing out any acacia blossoms or budding eucalypt branches brought into the house... both of which he loves, even though they upset his stomach.

...Which is kind of interesting: why does native bush disturb a native grass parrot? Is there some compound in the foliage that, not being common to Old World fruits and veggies, gives a little shock to his system? Would love to know...:)
