Bugs in my parrot’s food !!!

Postby salketbi » Wed Aug 24, 2011 3:48 pm

Today, I found small brown bugs in my parrot food. I did a search the internet and found out that they are called “confused flour beetle” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confused_flour_beetle.

I learned a way to clean the seeds which is to put it in the freezer for few hours and that will kill the bugs totally. However; my parrot has been eating this for a while. Does anyone know if they are armful?? Or if the bug’s eggs could get into my bird’s stomach and develop there?

Regards,
Saif

As far as I know they are not harmful but do make a mess and drive you crazy. I buy my seed in sealed containers. If I have to buy a bag of seed I put it in the freezer overnight. I always check at the store but sometimes I miss them. Never buy old seed or pellets.

This goes for all dry foods including dog and cat food. I put everything in sealed containers. I even put flour and cereal in sealed containers.

Those little bugs and pantry moths are hard to deal with. You need to go through your starchy foods and check for them. The pantry moths are the worst though. I have to buy traps for them.
These things don't seem to get in sugar or sweet food.

Thank you for passing by, I consulted a veterinary and they recommended that putting the parrot food in the freezer is not enough. Even if they die, they will still be dead bugs in you parrot’s food !!, those little bugs can upset the stomach of your bird as big quantity could be harmful. His advice was to spread the seeds on a piece of plastic under the sun for half an hour, that will drive the bugs to escape. Then I recommend putting the seeds in the freezer which will kill the eggs if there was any. Few hours in the freezer are not enough, put them over night at least.

In fact I read in an article that feeding seeds all the time is like eating MacDonald’s 3 meals a day!! Therefore; I always give my bird fruits(fresh & dry) and vegetables with the seeds.
