Food for a Sun conure

Postby Ashwin1224 » Thu Sep 08, 2011 11:45 am

Hi all,

I recently got a new Sun conure Mojo. The guy from whom i bought him sternly said feed him only sunflower seeds. So i did the same for sometime, but then i read on the internet about the potential harm from them. When i told this to the guy he said this is what conures eat around the world and refused about the possibility of any branded bird food in existence.

I tried getting from eBay and other places but due to various reasons i still haven't got some.So now i feed him only apples, asian pears and green chillies. He doesn't eat bananas if i put it in his feeder, he just throws it out.I occasionally give him some hard boiled egg.

The shop guy also said that if i feed him cooked white rice he will die (?!). And since this is just like a warning from his side, i haven't tried, is it true?

What else can he eat.I know about peas, sprouts and stuff.I ve read that they can eat pasta too, what kind of pasta?

What kind of cooked food can he eat?
Is a bit of salt good for him?

And can he eat biscuits and cereals made for human consumption? I am referring to glucose biscuits and normal un-seasoned cereals like cornflakes and stuff.

Hi,

Well, Try and find a food which you can buy, it will be hard but worth it in the long run. About the cooked White rice, it is not certainly not true for cockatiels, as i have fed it to Ladu before and I doubt it is true for sun conures. They can eat any pasta, but only before you put sauce and salt on it (salt is very bad for them) so as soon as it is boiled, you can give mojo some. They can eat some cereals like cornflakes (the original flavour with the least amount of sugar) and they can also eat weetabix (don't add sugar) and special k (original flavour). I don't think they can eat biscuits and I have never fed Ladu any because I am not fully sure if they are ok or not, but maybe someone who knows if this is ok will reply soon.
