How to get him more interested in veggies

Postby laducockatiel » Thu Sep 29, 2011 10:00 am

So, I've been feeding Ladu veggies everyday (and i still do) and he does eat them, but he doesn't eat much. He doesnt seem interested enough. I've tried mash and normal but im stuck. Does any one know a way to get him more interested?

If he eats some but not much, that's probably fine. The important thing is to get them to try them and accept them. Beyond that point I think they can regulate how much of it they need to eat on their own.

Bake it into a bread. Seriously, you can put all sorts of things in there and he won't even know..

Another thing is too grow wheat/oat grass. I grow a small container of it and my birds chomp on the blades throughout the day. Very healthy and Australian parakeets eat grasses in the wild anyway.

I think I'll go with growing Ot grass, so thanks. He sure loves chomping on plants so he'll be happy :D one question tho, can it be grown inside?

Yep, just get a handful of oat kernels and flatten them over an inch of soil in a little container/pot, and sprinkle some more soil on top. Water it daily so it stays moist throughout the day.

So can they eat the grass as soon as it starts growing?

Dumb me - I have been giving them wheat and oat grain. I never thought of letting it sprout.
How do you make birdie bread?

I have come to a point in my life and have friends the same age who are able to travel. We went to Raleigh NC for 4 days to the VFW State convention because my VFW Post made All State Post. We spent a week in San Antonio for a Veterans of Foreign Wars National Convention because we made All American VFW Post. My friends planned a trip to Myrtle Beach SC for a weeks vacation with their family and included me. They just got a free weekend at the beach for delivering a truck to a truck show there. They included me. I can't beat free vacations.

My mother is doing better and Hospice has dropped her and brought in physical therapists. Things are looking up for me.

My problem: my daughter is somewhat of a scatter brain and does not always attend to my birds.
I will load all their feeder (I have the ones with reservores that feed down into bowls) so they won't go hungry. I will set up double waterers (I use baby chick waterers with a pint jar) for them.
She just doesn't remembr to give them fresh foods.

Growing wheat and oat grass in pots would be great. Thanks for the info. If you give me the recipe for bird bread I can set them up before I go.

Thanks for the help.

I'd let it grow somewhat of a carpet first, before giving it to them. If you soak the oats overnight, then plant them, they will grow faster. It takes about 3-4 days to get to a good size.

Liz- just google 'bird bread' for recipes. That's what I've done, and got a lot of cool ideas.
I like this page though- http://www.birdsnways.com/birds/rbreads.htm
