Change in Stool, Cause Unknown

Postby AS91379 » Wed Oct 05, 2011 7:26 am

My Green-Cheeked Conure has gone from normal stools to pure water/very runny stools over the past few days. I changed her food to Harrison's yesterday, thinking her diet might be inadequate. Could it be her diet, or is she drinking a lot of water for unknown reasons? There are no changes in her behavior, appearance, etc.

She has also sneezed regularly since I got her, and her tail feathers have been plucked half to death. I'm not sure of this is related, but I figured I'd throw it out there.

If this continues, switch the food back and see if it helps.

Her stool has been runny for about five days. Until yesterday, she had been on the same food for the entire three months that I've had her, so the stool change happened with her old food. The ONLY thing that has changed this week is that it has gotten colder outside (we live in North Georgia), but she is a 100% indoor bird.

Have you been feeding her veggies recently?

How old is this bird? Is she lethargic? Is the stool just clear water or do you see the three parts of it clearly: white, green/yellow, and clear.

If you do not see the three parts of the stool clearly, take the bird to the vet without delay. This means that the bird isn't eliminating waste correctly, and is potentially a sign of organ failure, likely kidney. If the bird is lethargic, take it to the vet.

If the stools are just runny, then you can probably take some time to figure it out and wait to see if it becomes normal. A change in diet usually will affect the stools, as well as likely stress.

Her behavior has been 100% normal, and I haven't seen any weight problems.

No, I haven't been feeding her veggies, as she won't eat them. (Still trying to figure out how to fix that.)

Her stool does have the three parts in it, and it varies on just how watery it is. Sometimes, it's about 95% water, and other times, it's almost normal.

Could be a seasonal change. My parrot has been that way the last few days too. But feeding veggies may have some to do with it.
