Rainbow lorikeet sneezing

Postby Rainbow » Sat Oct 22, 2011 1:40 am

:rainbow: hello all my first post.
I have a 3 month old hand raised rainbow lorikeet, he is the smartest little thing :)
I've had him a few days now (brought from a pet shop) I've noticed he sneezes every now and then. Not just the "my face is overed in apple" sneezes but tiny little noises a couple times a day, it's not loud or very disruptive to him but he is also my first bird. I try to keep the air fresh around him at all times and it's summer here so it's not cold.
Is this normal? Is he just excited? or are there "bird flus" (for lack of a better word) that he could have picked up the shop?

I must add he looks like a very healthy and happy bird. I'll take him to the vet soon if it gets at all worse.

Congratulations!

You should definitely take your lorikeet to a good avian vet soon. All new birds must be checked for disease, bacteria, etc. Even if he isn't acting very sick he could still be carrying something - Psittacosis is a very common bird disease that is transferable to humans. It can stay dormant in the birds body for a long time.

The sneezing could easily be normal - birds sneeze to clear their nostrils - or it could be a symptom of something worse. In any case, a vet check up is needed!

he may of dunked his head a little to far into his wetmix and its gone up his nostrils and dried, my lorikeet does it also. but with all new birds its important to get a overall health check at a vet. so this would be a good time to check it
