So Skittles is a little chubby...

Postby Kirsten » Wed Nov 02, 2011 9:37 am

I took Skittles to the vet after holding off for money reasons for awhile. His mood instantly got better when we clipped his nails. I think they were getting annoying for him. Anyway, my vet said he had a little bit of "cushion" on him. He was about 98 grams and the vet said to keep him somewhere between 90 and 95. So now I'm cracking down on some of his foods.

We're the kind of family that likes to share our food with the bird. It's not a great habit, I admit, but it's the reality. His diet consists of a small (even smaller now) glob of peanut butter in the morning as a treat. He then just nibbles on a mix of cockatiel food and Zupreem fruit flavored pellets until he goes into his cage. There, he gets a mix of dried fruit, nuts, and we give him two shelled peanuts that he likes to tear apart. By the time we take him downstairs when we get home is actually where the trouble starts I think. Dad likes to share his Clif bars (high-fat natural energy bars) with Skittles and sometimes gives him a tiny piece of a Nature Valley bar. Sometimes, he also manages to get a little bit of vanilla ice cream as well. Three days a week, he shares a protein shake with my dad that's full of fruit so I don't consider that so bad.

Other human food he gets infrequently is cinnamon raisin bagels, pizza crust, yogurt and bits of oatmeal and fruit in dad's cereal. So, it doesn't really need to be said, it's no wonder he's a little overweight. I am now giving him smaller globs of peanut butter (I know it's fattening but it's just become routine for him to get a treat in the morning). I also plan to cut back on the frequency of his junk food. Also, the cockatiel mix we got from Walmart has sunflower seeds. I'm thinking of replacing them with dried peas or corn or something and mixing it with the Zupreem he already gets.

So I guess what I want to ask is for any advice on helping cut back his weight? I know he isn't severely overweight or anything, but I just have the whole "protective mom" thing going on. Has anyone else ever had an overweight bird and what did you do to help him get back to a healthy weight? Sorry for the post being so long... :?

You start the day with peanutbutter, nuts and dry fruit.

Peanutbutter and nuts are high fat and high calorie. Dried fruit is consentrated fruit which makes it high sugar and high calorie.

I would suggest using fresh vegies as treats. They don't have fat and they are low in calories.

I don't mind mine having a little extra weight but your feeding your bird junk food on a regular basis.

Only issue is that Skittles has this weird aversion to fresh fruits and vegetables. He's actually kind of finicky with even dried veggies and fruits too. Maybe if blend them up he'd be more receptive to it? He loves the shake dad makes, so maybe if I just use the right mix...

I've looked into sprouting too. Would that be a good option?

Also, I actually only clipped his wings this time because I wanted to make sure his feathers weren't lopsided. I don't plan on clipping them anymore unless he develops an attitude. He has been getting pretty good at flying actually. It shouldn't take too long before he's flying back and forth between the dining room and his perch. I know that it's fantastic exercise.

Honestly, sounds like he's picky because he's spoiled. Stop feeding him the junk food and just go with veggies and pellets. He'll refuse it a little at first, drop the weight, then start eating. Of course don't overdo it and monitor the weight. But if he's getting all his favorite stuff all the time, what reason does he to eat the stuff that's healthy?

There's no doubt he's spoiled. I think I'm going to run by the local Whole Foods store today and get some veggies to chop up and give him. Any ideas on ways to preserve the veggies so they last longer? I actually don't eat vegetables due to the fact that I'm probably just as picky as he is. I'm still going to see about sprouting too. It actually looks kinda fun...

Fresh vegetables for short term. Frozen vegetables for long term.

It sounds like you were raised on junk food too.

If you give a kid his desert first he will not eat his healthy food.

I've heard bad things about Zupreem. I've heard that the second largest ingredient in some of their foods in sugar. I know they make a "natural" kind of food but be sure to check the ingredients and make sure there isn't any sugar or dyes such as Red Lake 40. Dyes are harmful to your bird. I don't know for sure though, I don't buy Zupreem. :?

Huh, I bought my pellets from a breeder and she swore by Zupreem. They came in large ziplock baggies so I don't have the nutritional information. I'll see if I can find it online though, thanks.

For the record, I have an eating disorder. I freak out if food is even shaped a certain way. We can't exactly afford a psychologist to work with me right now though. Maybe this will be a chance for Skittles and I to try new food together. I saw the blog post Michael put up about how the parrot wants the food more if their owner is eating it, which I think is definitely the case for Skittles. I'll let you all know how things go.
