Vitamin B

Postby Khaiqha » Sat Nov 05, 2011 1:42 pm

My irn, Ace, got a clean bill of health from the vet today, but the vet said Ace could use more vitamin B in his diet. I've looked online and all the foods high in vitamin b are seafood. The vet said I could use supplements, but I don't know if that's a good idea to Ave pellets and supplements. Any suggestions?

Apparently the skin around/in his mouth could be brighter. Ace was fine with the whole exam, including being toweled, but when it came time for the mouth check that's when he got upset. I suppose I would be too if someone forced my mouth open.

What diet is the bird on now? Of course, the vet's info would override mine and anyone else's on an online parrot forum. But, I don't usually like the idea of supplementing for a bird as they are prone to liver disease.

If the bird isn't on a pelleted diet, I recommend switching to one that supplements with vitamin B. Harrisons seems to be the popular choice for hardcore bird fans, as it has proven to provide many generations of healthy birds. It is also organic. While it only has vitamin b12 as a supplement, it has other ingredients in the package that contain the vit B complex naturally.

Further foods to try would be: Eggs, asparagus, sweet potato, nuts, bananas, broccoli, oatmeal, peas. However, on a pelleted diet, fresh foods/treats should not exceed 10% of overall intake.
