Overweight budgies

Postby Zooey » Mon Nov 21, 2011 10:12 pm

Today I was looking at Perry and I got very worried. From all the training and influence from Lemonlime, he is getting fat. Seriously fat. So fat he can't even smooth out his feathers. I'm trying to convert them to a healthier pellet diet and give them less seed, but millet is what I use to train them. I can't stop training! But he's gotten twice as fat as he was in my avatar to the left.
What can I do to get them healthy again? Lemonlime completely shakes the entire cage demanding food. PLEASE HELP ME!

Are you sure he is actually getting fat rather than just poofing up his feathers? Have you checked the weight? Do you notice a difference in plumpness based on feeling the breastbone? If he is poofing up a lot, he can be cold or sick.

I know he's getting fat. During the day he's able to get unfluffed, so he probably isn't sick, and I can see him getting rounded. Sometimes I stroke him while he's on my finger targeting, and I can feel his stomach. I haven't felt his bone though, because he flies away when I try to.

You should probably try to temporarly reduce the amount of millet and treat which you give to it and try to use a training clicker more. Also try to use a lighter seed mix and don't put too much in the bowl. You will then find that Perry will slowly decrease in weight and get slimmer. Once Perry has got to abn average size then you should continue training as usual with treats.
Good Luck! :budgie2:
