Sun Conure Diet

Postby KrystalMarie0326 » Sun Nov 27, 2011 8:04 pm

Hey I was wondering what would be the best food to buy for my sun conure?? I know to give him many freash fruit and veggies daily.. I have been to Petsmart to look at all the different foods they carry I just want to make sure I get something healthy for him. I do not have my lil one yet he is still being weaned hoping to have him within the next week or two just want to make sure I have everything ready for when he does get to come home =)
Thanks for any help you can give!

I would stay away from big stores like Petsmart, PetCo, etc. The brands they carry are of mediocre/low quality. I would buy pellets online such as Roudybush, Harrison's, Totally Organics. Check out www.mysafebirdstore.com

Agreed. Any only now, after 16 or so years of parrot keeping, am I realizing this.

My vet recommended Zupreem, which is available at PetSmart and Petco. It's a pellet rather than seed. She doesn't recommend seed or too much fresh fruit and vegtables. She also recommended one organic brand, but I don't remember what that was at the moment. Also, if you are getting a bird that is just weaned, my breeder recommends special weaning pellets. So you might ask your breeder about this. Good luck with your new baby, they are noisy, but so worth it. Mine squawks in unison with the dog everytime I come up the front walk. It's very cool. Enjoy your new best friend. And don't clip it's wings, they love to get a little air time periodically.

Zupreem pellets are not very good, they contain many artificial colours and dyes to try and make the pellet more attractive to parrots. They also contain a lot of sugar, which is also very bad. Altogether, I would stay away from brands like zupreem because they are very unhealthy for your bird.

From what I have heard, I must concur with Ladu, Zupreem doesnt have the best reputation. I would go for another brand =).

Harrison's and Totally Organics.

I switched my birds onto a mix of these and their feathers have improved dramatically. They look glossy and beautiful. My Sun Conure's beak also stopped peeling.

I used to feed Zupreem Fruit Blend. Those pellets are disguisting. Top ingredient is ground GMO corn, which is just bad news all around. Plus artificial colors that change the color of their poops depending on which pellets they're eating. Plus, the colors leech into the water if your bird likes to dunk its food. Disguisting. Don't ever feed that to anything alive.
