Help giving fruit and veg.

Postby EleriDragonfly » Sun Dec 11, 2011 11:35 am

To my Budgie. I want to start giving my budgie Wheatly some fruit and vegetables, I tried giving him a spinach leaf by hanging it from the roof of his cage, but he pecked at it twice but didn't seem interested. I tried chopping it up into small pieces and putting it in his food bowl, but he didn't touch it. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions? Or should I just keep putting fruit and vegetables in his cage and just let him go to it himself?

My Dante is reluctant to try new foods. Both Nikko and Maxwell will at least nibble anything I offer them, but Dante is more likely to move his head away and say "no" if I give him something he isn't familiar with. I've had SOME success by eating a little bit of what I'm offering him myself first, but that doesn't always work. I mostly just put whatever it is I'm giving him into his bowl and hope that he is inspired by my other two birds to actually try it. Sometimes it works; sometimes I end up with bits of carrot tossed about my bird room.

I think the best way to introduce birds to fruit and veg is to bake them birdy bread. Your budgie will love the bread and will have to eat the veggies to eat the bread and he probably won't even realise the veggies so he will still be getting the nutrition from the verdict and veg without knowing. Here is the recipe to bird bread: http://www.birdsnways.com/birds/rbreads.htm

Stitch tries anything he sees me trying, so all I have to do for him to try something new is to take a bite of it myself. Whether he likes it or not, thats a different story ^^.

Thank you ^^ I'll try and bake some birdy bread tomorrow, and I might try and eat an apple infront of him, see what works ^^ Thanks for the advice.

Make sure to eat the same type of apple slices you plan to give him =).

Just wanted to thank everyone for the advice ^_^ I gave Wheatley some lettuce today, I left it there for him to get used to it, then I started pretending to eat some myself. (I don't like lettuce xD ) But Wheatley started eating a bit as well, now he's nibbling away quite happily :)

Great! Just a quick tip though, don't feed lettuce very often because it is mainly water and has no nutritional content for your bird. If your bird likes lettuce, just feed him another type of leafy green like kale or watercress.

Oh thanks for telling me, I'll get him some of that tomorrow ^^
And with the lettuce I just wanted to introduce him to the wonders of vegetables x3 And I thought that lettuce would be a good starting point for him, I'll be sure not to feed it to him too often. :)
