Snacks that even cockroaches wont touch

Postby macbrush » Fri Jan 20, 2012 1:47 am

I bought this snack from a local bird shop for Spencer, but Spencer only likes pellets and sunflower seeds, so instead of throwing them away, I offered those snack to my fruit/veggie eating cockroaches, and some to those would basically eat anything I throw at them. To my surprise, there are a few red and orange pieces not even the most hungry, non-picky cockroach species would touch! And the worst part is after a week or so, they didn't even mold or do I find any other kind of small insects (like mites or springtails) on those so called food. Not sure if that mean anything, but I would definitely stay way from this snack in future.

Yeah, it kind of scares me what kind of "foods" are available to birds in pet stores. It's even sadder that some ignorant pet owners would only buy that and have their bird subsist off of it. If it doesn't decompose it's not food, it's a problem! Then again, we as humans consume cheeseburgers from McDonald's that fail to change at all when left out in the open for a year or more.

Having a pet parrot has definitely made me rethink what I put into my own body!

HAHA! oh my gosh.. the headline of this post made me want to reply with the intention of discussing the different kinds of Tupperware that is airtight and some that you can use in the freezer etc, for you to make sure you're food is safe from cockroaches!
but meanwhile you want to feed your pet cockroaches! :D

Good thing you have your "little test subjects" to test your parrot treats on!

PS why dont you try buying dried fruit and nuts etc that are made for humans.. (ofcourse without any added sugar or salt) but you can be assured that they are of a better quality than some of the snacks made for our birdy buddies
