Good pellets to feed a baby budgie

Postby allirho » Tue Jan 24, 2012 12:46 pm

Hi everyone,
I got my baby budgie about a week ago and have been trying to convert him (could be a her, but we've been referring to the bird as a him for now) to a pellet diet.
Currently, I'm feeding the budgie Premium Prestige Budgies seed mix by the brand Versele-Laga and trying to convert the budgie over to ZuPreem fruitblend flavor pellets.
The seed mix contains little bits of pellet in it as well and so far the budgie has been eating those pellets and just nibbles here and there on the ZuPreem fruitblend flavor pellets.
I've read on some other posts that the ZuPreem pellets contains harmful artificial colouring and that it's not a very good pellet to feed my bird, so I'm wondering what kind of pellets would be good to feed a budgie?
Seeing as he's only nibbling a bit on his current pellets I think it would be best to switch brands now before he completely takes to the ZuPreem ones.

I've also been trying to introduce some fresh veggies and fruits into his diet.
So far he's nibbled at most of what i've offered him to try but doesn't exactly eat the fruits/veggies happily.
I've put some broccoli into his dish raw yesterday and it looks like he tried to eat some of the flowering off of it, but hardly any of it is gone, though it does look pretty mangled.
Does this maybe mean that he's having a difficult time biting off the bits of flowering, since the bird is still really young?
I was going to try steaming some broccoli to make it softer to see if this encourages him to eat it, this is ok to do, yes?

I guess that was really two questions in one, but any advice would be appreciated! :D

Keep offering those veggies! Yeah, stay away from fruitblend, if you look at the ingredients it's really inferior to a lot of other pellets. I would suggest Totally Organics pellets, Harrison's, Roudybush. Bu more so of the first two.

I would suggest you start growing wheat/oat grass and feed just sprouted bird seed. Sprouted seeds are extremely nutritious and Budgies as grass parakeets should have a lot in their diet.

Thank, GlassOnion!
I'll definitely take a look at those pellet brands and try growing some sprouts.
Could i possibly try sprouting the bag of seeds I'm currently feeding my budgie (the premium prestige budgies by Versele-Laga)?
I bought a whole bag of it when I first got my budgie and seeing as I'm converting to pellets It seems like the whole bag will go to waste.
Would it still be nutritious to feed sprouts from these common seed mixes?

I'm looking at Harrison's pellets right now online... would a young budgie be alright on adult lifetime superfine pellets, or should I feed the budgie the high potency mash or the high potency superfine pellets?
There so many to choose from, it's overwhelming!

It would be fine to sprout the versele laga seed mix. It is actually good, because there is a variety of different seeds to sprout.

In terms of which pellets to use, I'd suggest the Harrison's high potency super fine pellets. They are small, which is good since you have a baby budgie, and they have high energy, so if your bird won't eat much during its conversion, they will keep its energy levels high do it doesn't get as hungry.

I think they actually suggested that to do the conversion on high potency, and stay with it for at least 6 months, then you can decide whether to switch to adult lifetime.

My grey converted to high potency from Fruitblend in about 2 days. Now he won't even touch the Fruitblend.

Great, thanks Macbrush and Laducockatiel,
I think I'll go with the Harrison's high potency superfine pellets and I'll get started on sprouting those seeds.

Im so happy to hear that you're spoiling your budgie, not many people put that much effort into a $30 bird :)

I can't resist!
This budgie has been attached to me since the first day I brought it home.
He's incredibly cuddly and makes me feel very special since he's constantly flying to me and wanting to be around me.
I feel like I owe it to him to make him feel special too :)
Don't you just love how birds steal your heart like that?
