Apple sauce for a budgie?

Postby allirho » Fri Jan 27, 2012 12:14 am

the title pretty much says it!
I'm just wondering if it's ok to feed a little budgie some apple sauce.
I bought an organic unsweetened brand and fed a little to him today mixed in with his seeds for dinner, but I thought it'd be wise to double check before continuing with it.
My budgie would nibble at fresh apple but would never actually take a bite, chew and swallow any of it -no matter how thinly I would slice it. So, I thought it would be a good way to get something other than just seeds into his diet for now.

Also, I never seem to see my budgie drink water. ever.
I'm sure he has been, since i've had him for a week now and he's looking just fine... but I never see him even land near his water dish and he doesn't accept droplets of water I offer from the tip of my finger either. Hm.

Any advice?

Apple sauce is totally fine. It's just grated apples.

I would really, strongly, seriously suggest you sprout your bird seed :) It's a million times healthier than dry seed and even seed junkies take to it very easily! Besides, budgies eat a lot of sprouted seeds in the wild.

I was actually going to start sprouting the seeds I have today, but these seeds (they are Versele-Laga I think) come with pellets in them as well and I was afraid those might mold if I tried to sprout these seeds. What do you think?

I will most definitely start feeding Tamago sprouts though as soon as I can get another seed mix without the pellets. Or if it is ok to sprout these seeds with the pellets in it too.

a question, do the sprouted seeds them completely substitute seeds in the diet? or do I still have to feed a bit of non-sprouted seeds here and there? do they substitute a portion of fruits/veggies that the budgie should be eating as well?

I think if you soak the seed/pellet mix in the water for maybe an hour and rinsed them heavily under running water, the pellets would all melt away. Then you can resume the lengthy initial soaking process.

Also, I think the sprouts would substitute a bit of both dry seeds and veggies since it's a bit of both, lol! I would still feed a tiny amount of dry seed since it would be a good source of fat and oils.

That's a really good idea, I didn't think of that!!
When I mixed the apple sauce and seed mix together the pellets all puffed up and pretty much rinsed away when i rinsed out the seed hulls/apple sauce remaining.
Great, I'll try it out!
