Leroy crashed into a wall

Postby cml » Fri Jan 27, 2012 1:49 pm

Leroy was out flying and crashed into a wall yesterday and since then he's not really been himself.

There are no signs of illness, he eats like a pig as usual, his poop hasnt changed and he has no balance issues.

What we have noticed though, which was very obvious, is that he is moving more slowly, and he doesnt want to either step up or flight recall. He just wants to sit still or move around slowly.
He can fly by himself, no worries there, and land perfectly. The problem is that he doesnt want to do any of the stuff he's learned so well. He still wants to cuddle, get his head scratches and touching him is no problem.

Any suggestions? I called our vet (bird expert vet, how thankful I am that we have a clinic focused on exotic animals in our town), and their advice was to observe his apetite, balance and behavior. They didnt think that I needed to come in with him unless one of the above changes radically.

What do you guys think, is he just careful and being catious? Maybe he lost a little self esteem?
Any ideas why he doesnt want to do step up or flight recall, but still has no problems with our hands but actually likes to get scratched? Can it be that he doesnt want to come out of his cage, because its scary outside now? (we took him out for training today and it was tehre we realised that he didnt want to do the things he knew).

Cheers guys!

I should add that this behaviour is mainly outside of the cage, inside he seems a lot more sure of himself, although he still wont step up from inside the cage.

He may not have broken anything but could still be aching. Also might tame down his ego a bit. I know my parrots (especially Truman) could get all emo for a few days after an accident like that but then come back. Generally a bigger concern is concussion or breaking the neck. If neither happened, he'll probably recover within a few days. Regardless, there is rarely much the vet can do.

Truman flew straight smack into a window at full speed once, bounced off the glass, and came straight to me. He was mellow for a few days and I did bring him to the vet. They couldn't find anything wrong and sure enough after a few days was back to normal.

I wouldn't worry about it, after crashing on my motorcycle, usually took me a few weeks to regain 100% confident.

Leroy is on the right path I think, but not quite there yet.

He now moves around at full speed again, and he will happily target INSIDE his cage, but no matter how we tried today, he wouldnt come out. It was obvious he thought outside was scary, and there was no chance he would step up.

Any suggestions =)?

I was just wondering... Does this Leroy has anything to do with UBRS? That might explain his wall crashing.

UBRS? ^^

I think his issues are that he is used to living in a big aviary where crashing feet first into the aviary wall means landing on it. The effect is somewhat different when hitting a wall though, hence his crashes ;).

Ever saw the movie Leroy & Stitch? ^^

Positive news, my wife managed to target Leroy ut of his cage today (after I rearranged the cage making it very easy to just walk to the opening). We are once again making progress!

Thanks for the support everyone =).
