can petting or touching your bird often be bad?

Postby xxarmando » Sat Jan 28, 2012 10:03 am

Hello :)

I recently got Luna a Quaker parrot. She is about 3-4 months old and most of the day I keep her outside on her desktop play gym.I wanted to ask if keeping her outside of her cage for long periods of time during the day is bad for her? She has food water and toys and she likes exploring around the room while I do HW ect. I do frequently ask her to step up (which she recently learned to do!) and I will give her scratches often. She likes climbing on my shoulder and she might stay there for a few minutes. Is it bad that I do carry her pet her oftentimes. I am kinda scared since I read this arcticle that I am gonna link at the bottom. I do train her everyday and am always talking to her. Thanks so much for the advice.
cheers, Armando

Cuddling is not bad but he must have birdie time. Only feed him in his cage. You can leave the door open but he has to learn that that is where his stuff is. Put toys in his cage even if he has toys outside his cage. Give him things to do without you and spend quality time with him.

Thanks Liz for the advice :) I do let her be in her cage since 8 in the morning when she wakes up and till about 11 that's when I take her to my room and she hangs out next to me on her play gym. Whenever she wants to come out she squawks a little lol do your birds hang out with you around the house on your shoulder?

Liz I also wanted to ask you do you have all of your birds in the same room? Do they like each other? I heard Quakers are very jealous yet I was thinking of later on getting a cockatiel and having them both in the living room obviously not next to each other but in the same room. I will also quarantine them first before even getting close to Luna. Thanks so much for the help ^.^

My 2 Amazons, Rambo and Myrtle, are the only ones out all the time. Myrtle loves Rambo and does not get jealous unless he is on the wrong shoulder. She wants my left shoulder. Rambo is jealous that Myrtle can fly and he can't, but he is practicing flying with wing muscle instead of feathers.

My tiels are all together in a flock and act like a family. Right now the whole flock is feeding Tommy & Tammy's babies. When they are out the tiels and lovies join together.

Myrtle flies to me as I am getting my first cup of coffee. She stays on my shoulder for about 15 minutes until she has had enough cuddle time then she flys away to start getting into trouble. She comes back to me during the day for a few minutes at a time.

Rambo has decided he likes my daughter better than me. When Myrtle comes to me in the morning he walks to where Rachel is to wake her up and spends about 15 minutes with her before he walks off to find some trouble.

They do cuddle time, play time and napp time all day.

Thanks so much for the great advice. Its amazing the love myrtle and rambo have for you. They sound soo cute I would like to see a picture of your whole flock. I think its so cute when they start getting into trouble reminds me of toddlers when they play. As we speak Luna has decided to investigate my new desktop pc and is looking at her reflection lol. Does Rambo not fly? Or are his wings clipped? Its amazing how they go to you when they wake up and I love that you have so many birds! How did you acquire each one? And are the lovebirds sweet my brother in law is interested in a baby lovebird are they better in pairs. Sorry for so many questions you just give great advice. Thanks for everything Liz

There are picstures of Rambo and Myrtle in "pictures of you flock".
Rambo doesn't get into much. Myrtle is like a toddler. She is into everything like a kid in it's "terrible two's".
All of mine including the dogs and cats are rescues one way or another. My daughter bought :greycockatiel: :greycockatiel: Tommy & Tammy and

You said she squawks when she gets let out. This is the start of a serious disaster if you give in.

Do. NOT. go open the cage door when she starts screaming. Instead, ignore her until she is completely quiet or respond when she makes a cute, quiet sound. SO many parrots develop serious screaming problems and get rehomed because the owner pretty much trained the bird to scream for attention.
