Freezing harrisons?

Postby marie83 » Fri Feb 10, 2012 2:12 pm

Is it ok to freeze harrisons lifetime fine and if so what in?

The information on the bag says not to store it in anything other than the original bag, I have 6 old 1lb bags that I usually split a new 1lb bag into and refrigerate but tbh even though my :gcc: and :greycockatiel: don't eat much, its cheaper in the long run to buy the 5lb bags I want to buy that and split it up into a weeks worth then get them out the freezer each week. I've loads of tiny plastic tubs I can use for this but I'm not sure if its ok?

Thanks

Well, the reason most people say to buy the smaller bags is because it will be fresher with each new bag. Why don't you contact the manufacturer for their recommendations? Their phone number is listed on the site:

The original bag is a ziplock. Just mash the air out of it before you zip and put it in the freezer. It does not freeze together so you can just serve the amount you want. I do this because pantry moths discust me.

I may e-mail them instead, I'm in the UK and that number would cost a fortune but thank you.

I've known other people who freeze birdfoods to keep it fresh but they don't use harrisons. Obviously if I can't freeze it then I won't buy the big bags. I want my birds to have the best food I can so a big bag would go stale and actually end up costing more.

hi liz
what do pantry moths? look like? I have never frozen harrisons before, because i only have one bird. i just buy the one pound bags in bulk, so as to make for less postage. i keep, the pellets which are in use in the fidge un their original ziplock bag, with the air mashed out.
is this the best thing?

Pantry moths a little flying monsters that come in on dry foods. Once in the house if not controled they will get into flour, cereal, other pet foods and anything starchy. They come in on dog and cat food as well as bird seed and pellets.

I have had to fight them many times. If not controlled they will make nests and you will have what looks like small maggots everywhere. I had to buy pantry moth traps with a sex lore in them. I keep a supply of them on hand at all times.

The best way I have found to stop them is to put my pet food in the freezer for 24 hours before I use it. Since you are using small amounts your method is good.

It stay fresh when you keep it in the original bag in the fridge. It's what I do and I have not had any problems. It's what was recommended by my vets office.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread but I have this very same question and I was wondering if anyone ever got a definitive answer.

I feed my birds Harrison's and buy the 1 lb. bags but it would be more economical to buy the 5 lb. bags, portion it out, freeze it, and defrost as needed. I just don't know if I can freeze it.

I know Michael freezes his Roudybush pellets, and I was also wondering how to defrost them once they are frozen? Do you put them in the fridge to defrost or do you leave them on the counter overnight?

Any answers would be appreciated. :-)

I freeze the Harrisons now with no problems. Vet said it was fine and what they do with their supply until needed. Like liz said further up it doesn't freeze in block because its dry so you can get it out on a day by day basis from 1 container/bag or portion it up in advance before freezing. I prefer to portion it up though.
