cockatiel and weird sound

Postby xxarmando » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:22 pm

hello

My brothers cockatiel has been making the weirdest sound. We don"t know if its him being angry or crying. I am gonna link a video of how he sounds and if any cockatiel owners have heard their pet make this sound. He is about 1-2 months we believe. Thanks so much for your help in advance :)

He wont stop even if my brother scratches him or anything , Im the one that calms him somewhat when I start nodding and saying " yeah yeah " but he seems to do that for the most part of the day.

To be honest Tico was the only one of my cockatiels that used to sound like one of those little wind up toys, its the sort of thing I had only heard before when opening a nest box to inspect chicks.
How old is the 'tiel and is he hand raised? I'm wondering if its related to hand feeding since Tico was the only 'tiel I've had who was hand raised.
My other 'tiels have all spit at me but only if I've frightened them but that sounds nothing like the 'wind up toy' noise Tico made.

Hopefully someone else can answer, I never really thought much of it before and now I'm curious lol.

He looks very young, and hungry ! I would give him warm baby food in a spoon or seringe.

hello :)

Thanks for the help well he is about 1 and a week old we believe. When we purchased him he was already weaned on seeds. We also bought formula for him yet he refuses to eat from the syringe he also is terrified of spoons for some reason. He was hand raised by the breeder but he makes the noise in the video when he is randomly in his cage or on somones finger.

Just to check, is he eating his seed mixture? If so how much? What about fruit and veg? He is very young and its possible he isn't eating enough. Have you tried putting the formula in a thick-ish consistancy in his bowl to see if he will take any that way if he doesn't like the spoon or syringe?
Have you weighed your bird to check he is a normal weight for his age? Have you taken him for his initial vet check yet? You could always mention it to the vet when you go, or even just ring them for advice if he has already been, if your worried. Or contact the breeder you got him from to check.

I definitely think you need to closely monitor what he is eating though and I mean what he is actually eating, not the bits he may pick up and throw on the cage floor. I've got no idea why the bird was sold to you so young, if he was 4/5 weeks old when you got him I don't reasonably see how the breeder could possibly know he was fully weaned, they should wait at least a week after the birds consistantly eating its adult diet as weaning is rarely that straightfoward and the birds will often go back a stage or two before weaning fully.

On the other hand it may just be something and nothing, like I said, mine grew out of it, none of my other 'tiels have ever done it so it may just be something to do with hand reared 'tiels and some sort of begging behaviour (Just a wild stab in the dark with my limited experience) although I've never heard of that before.

He can't be eating seeds only, unless you want him to get liver failure down the road. Cockatiels aren't meant to be eating a 100% seed diet. Whoever sells a parrot only feeding seeds is a very irresponsible person.

Offer him rice, grains, veggies, fruits. I put a bunch of veggies like broccoli, carrots, peppers, etc into the food processor with some noodles and rice to get a super fine mash.

Also, I would suggest you add pellets in his diet. Harrison's, Roudybush are good, Zupreem isn't as good and actually the same price as the better brands..

hello thanks for the advice everyone. Like I said he is young but we dont know the exact age its just my shot at guessing his age im probably gonna call the breeder and ask about that. This bird is actually my younger brothers not mine(hes 13). I will tell my brother to monitor his food intake but he does eat a good amount of seed during the day. He gets fed fruits such as apples bananas and lettuce or carrots daily. I have been telling him to switch him to pellets yet I thought it would be best for him to stay on seeds a little longer and then introduce to him pellets. I will try the thick formula method see if he bothers tasting it.Thanks so much for the help and I will make sure to have his food intake monitored. And question my quaker parrot just got weaned to zupreem pellets not the colored ones the ones that are "entree" that are natural color are those bad? And is it bad to have her weaned on one brand of pellets and then switch it randomly on her? Thanks for the help

That is a begging sound. He wants a feeding. :pied: Lemone' is still feeding :greycockatiel: :greycockatiel: Tommy's & Tammy's baby. She is 3 months old. He only feeds her a few times a day when she makes that noise.
