Red palm oil

Postby jacquie » Sun Feb 26, 2012 4:12 pm

Hi everyone. I'm just wondering what brand of palm oil folks are using as a supplement? How do you feed it - Do you feed with a syringe or mix into food? Do you feed this once per week or each day?

The only kind I can find locally is the Harrisons Sunshine Factor in a 1 oz bottle. I believe it was around $16 Canadian give or take a few dollars.

Sunny definitely needs to learn to take this since she is not a good eater (low appetite) and can't get out in natural light for at least 6 months of the year.

Thanks! :)

Just put a small amout (read label) onto the fresh food. If the food is warm, it will melt on top.

I even put it on pop sickle sticks and they would not play with them. I put some on a part of their play pateo that Rambo likes to chew on. He stopped chewing on it.

I guess I could smear it on things that I don't want them to chew.

Have you tried baking it into anything? I know it's one of the things Harrison's recommends putting into their bird bread. So I'm sure it will work as the "oil" in anything else you bake for them?

What I do with my birds is instead of feeding them Sunshine Factor I feed them Harrison's Power Treats. They are made with Sunshine Factor (in fact Harrison's own instructions are "SUNSHINE FACTOR - This organic Brazilian red palm fruit oil complements all diets except Power Treats") so you're not supposed to feed both at the same time. Both of my birds absolutely love Power Treats. If you go that route I doubt you will have trouble getting your bird to eat it. I give my birds Power Treats every day; it's something they look forward to and it also means they are getting a daily dose of organic palm oil.

I also have some Harrison's Sunshine Factor (which I no longer use). If you want to go that route one method I have used before, according to Harrison's instructions, was: "To liquefy, place bottle in warm water (about 80°F [27°C]) for a few minutes. Combine 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of the liquefied Sunshine Factor with 1 pound (0.45 kg) of the animal’s consumable food in a mixing bowl and stir. The food can be stored in the refrigerator in a sealed container and fed as needed daily to your bird."

As Christie mentioned, you can also mix it into Harrison's Bird Bread: "Combine entire bag of mix with 2 whole organic eggs including the shell (make sure it gets crushed) (remove yolk for less fat), 1 Tablespoon (15 ml) AVIx Sunshine Factor® or other high quality organic vegetable oil, and 1 cup (235 ml) water."

Thanks all. I haven't tried to bake birdy bread yet. I've had Sunny for 2 months so I'm just trying to work my way through different food ideas to see what she likes. I have time on Thursday when my daughter is at daycare so I'll give it a go. I've mixed a teaspoon in to her pellets and stored them in the fridge and I also try and put some in her warm mash. I guess I am just not convinced she is getting much of it because I throw out lots of her food at the end of the day - just not a food oriented bird. She does really like the Nutriberry treats but of course she picks out what she wants and drops the rest. I'll try the Harrisons power treats though and see if she eats more of it.

She has some stress barring in her feathers (I'm guessing at this. There are olive green/brown tips at the ends of her green feathers) and she is still chewing on her feathers too, so I do want to get some nutritional suppliments into her to augment her food.

Thanks again. :)

She has taken well to the Harrisons Power Treats with red palm oil. We'll see how it goes!

Thanks,
