Enlarged proventriculus---allergies?

Postby Grey_Moon » Sat Mar 03, 2012 12:35 pm

Yes, I know what you're all thinking---PDD.

You see, Jacko had an x-ray done a while ago and everything came back golden except for an enlarged proventriculus---she was treated with anti-fungals and antibiotics to see if it was an infection with no change post medication. Then, she was tested for the avian Bornavirus---which is now known to be the cause of PDD---and was thankfully negative.

So I wonder now---if she doesn't have PDD (and she doesn't seem to, and what with no symptoms and a negative test) what the cause of a swollen proventriculus could be?
The vet is pretty stumped and half-heartedly suggested heavy metal poisoning because minus her swollen proventriculus and feather plucking nothing else vis a vi the physical exam or the bloodwork or gram stains came back abnormal.
So my question is, would allergies cause an inflammatory reaction in the gut leading to an enlarged proventriculus if an allergic food was consumed?

Any ideas?

Nope, haven't done that. So far just one regular x-ray and two barium x-rays to check if the proventriculus was slow to empty or if there was a blockage, none of which was a problem.
But I'll definetly ask about that.

Here's a good article on Heavy Metal Poisoning. I suggest you send in a sample of paint from Jacko's current cage or anything metal she plays on or has a chance to ingest to rule out HMP.
