Coconut milk

Postby scooter4n » Sun Mar 11, 2012 2:00 pm

So I did search and looks like coconut milk is a good thing for parrots. SO few weeks back I started introducing Lucy (African Grey) to coconut milk and she loves it.
Drinks it like no tomorrow.
It has great source of calcium, vitamins, nothing but good stuff.
Here is my youtube video of it on my blog: http://www.myafricangrey.com/

Let me know if any of you feeding your parrots coconut milk?

thanks

I've heard a lot about lactose intolerance in parrots. It's mostly confusing. I wouldn't do that for my budgie, but I'm not sure about African Greys. I probably would not risk it.

scroll down. There's something on lactose intolerance.

Yep, true. Only dairy products contain lactose so don't worry about that.

Just be careful to only give a moderate amount of coconut milk to your bird. It isn't a natural food source for parrots and it is extremely high-calorie and fattening. It is probably fine, in limited quantities, as an occasional treat, but as a regular part of a bird's diet, I'd advise against it. At the very least, get some guidance from your vet.

Yeah Coconut milk is not milk, just like Sow milk is not milk. It really is just juice from a coconut.

It is fruit juice if you define Coconut as a fruit. Lactose is a sugar that only mammals produce to sustain their offspring. If us humans didn't produce this sugar than our mothers would of regurgitate food for us to eat when we were babies.

I give Ruby some coconut juice/milk when we buy one. I never buy from the bottle because they add more sugar and I've never been able to fine pure coconut milk.

I heard on a show on Food Network that coconut in large quantities also has a laxative effect - at least in humans. It is probably the same for our feathered friends. Birds with diarrhea are not the most fun to hang out with...
