Cheese?

Postby Lesa1211 » Tue Mar 20, 2012 3:58 pm

Hello, Im new to the forum. My Goffin will be 8 months old soon. When I first brought her home she wouldnt eat any fruits or veggies. I figured she just had to become comfortable and settle into her new home so I quit offering them. I didnt want to stress her out. The food I did try to give her a few times just sat in the cage all day, she didnt touch them. She is settled in now and wanting to eat almost everything, so for the past couple weeks Ive been giving her different things so I can figure out what she likes. So far she has had Brocoli, Kale, Pears, Brussel Sprouts, Banana's, Oranges, Asparagus, Green Peppers, Spinach and hard boiled eggs.

She doesn't seem to care much for the eggs or the oranges but I keep trying. Her favorites seem to be banana's and brocoli. Tomorrow we are trying rice! Anyway my question is I was eating a piece of cheese today and of course she wanted some. Is cheese ok?

Another question I have is anytime Im introducing somthing new to her she will only take it out of my mouth first. So I'll bite a tiny piece of whatever food it is and she'll take it. If I dont do this she wont taste it. Am I starting a bad habbit doing this?

Thanks for yor time!

Please don't feed your bird food which has been in contact with your mouth as human saliva contains bacteria which can kill a bird. By all means pretend to nibble on it though as long as it doesnt touch your lips/teeth/tounge.

Cheese is okay as a small treat, very small. There is a lot of fat and salt, and also lactose.

To convince my fids that something is good to eat I have them watch me eat the food item or each other.

ciao,
the only cheese that my parrot eats, is Parmesan, it is suggest by my breeder, because it is well tolerated by people lactose intolerant.
Lenticchia prostitutes herself to get a piece of cheese  . I know that it is too caloric and full of salt, but for tricks is the best bonus. ;)

Due to the lactose and casein..I personally wouldn't.

I'm lactose intolerant and I know how out of sorts it makes me feel when I eat something dairy, I wouldn't subject Jacko to it. My eyes and throat itch, my ears itch, my joints hurt and I get terribly tired and bloated, not to mention various stomach/digestive issues.
