Best pellets for Sun conure

Postby issy » Fri Mar 30, 2012 9:54 pm

Hi guys,

Just wanted to ask which pellet brand is mostly recommended for Sun Conures. I'm currently feeding him "Vetafarm South American Mix" and was thinking to start him on "Vetafarm Nutriblend small or mini pellets".
Just wondering if this is a good mix or if the colored pellets could be harmful.

I'm also open to other pellet brands, so anyone have any suggestions if I should stick to Vetafarm or switch to another brand?

I've heard of Harrisons before, so I will look into buying a bag :)

Just searched a bunch of Aus online pet supply shops and no Harrisons. Might go to my local Petbarn today and see if they stock it.

I second Harrison's. It's what my avian vet recommended to me and my birds' plumage has greatly improved on a Harrison's diet. (The plumage wasn't bad by any means but I noticed their feathers are brighter and shiner now).

The main reasons I like Harrison's is that it's a high-quality pellet that's all organic with no added coloring or preservatives.

I live in the States, though, so I'm not sure about its availability in Australia. This may (possibly) be of help: Where to buy Harrison's in Australia.

If you do go with the Harrison's (or even if you decide to go with something else), take a look at Harrison's Power Treats as well. My birds love them and they contain organic Brazilian red palm oil which is high in antioxidants and improves the condition of their skin (beak, nails), feet, and feathers.

Is it natural to have feather brightness fade a bit with age? My Sun Conure Starbuck is almost 3 years now, seems to be happy and healthy, has a varied nutritious diet but Ive noticed the feathers at the top of his head are not as bright as they were about a year ago. Is this natural?

Well, i Know there's people on the forum who will disagree but Harrison's. Our vet is a cockatiel, conure and parakeet specialist (so small parrots basically!)although he's good with all birds being an avian vet. He says Harrison's but only 20-30% the rest should be fruits, veggies, seed mix and spray millet. We use TOPS for our tiel and Harrison's mash for the red rump. They both have this percentage and they are fine. The heart disease factor can be generated by too little variety combined with high percentage of pellets, at least according to our avian vet... There is a wide spread dispute on this so just see what works for your bird and consult an avian vet. Like no one can agree on human nutrition no one agrees on bird nutrition either, in London there is an avian dietician and behaviourist at the Midland Exotic and Avian Pet hospital but you have to actually see them but that's what we got told from our avian vet.

Listen to all the opinions here but always consult your avian vet. If something changes in the birds health it's easier to track if you keep your vet informed.
