Given your discription of your current diet which sounds pretty varied I'd say add in a powdered vitamin supplement (if you don't already have one) and you're good to go. When you think about it pellets are pretty much just corn/soy/peanut/seed mush with vitamin supplements.

Thats my thought too. Just want to do some learning and I'm jumping *off* the pellet bandwagon.

In the book from bugies to mcCaws the parrot companion by rosmary low
it has a table with the different nutritional values of seed in it, which is interesting, athough i cant say i understand it completely.

Rosmary low says that pallets repesent the cheepest way to feed a single bird, that organic pellets are more expensive but many peaple swear by them.
I LIKE THIS BOOK.
DOES any one follow the diet tips from parrots for dummies? NICKY Mostacki says that tinned chickpeas are ok, if i rember correctly?

It is very much better. In that case, forget feeding pellets, no need if he is already on a great and nutritional diet! Just stick with the seeds and veggies.

An all seed diet isn't advised because of the lack of nutritional value. It's great though that he is eating fruits and vegetables. There are some good seed diets that have much more balanced nutrition than others. I feed my Senegal parrrot Zupreem fruit blend which he loves. Luckily when i got him 10 years ago the breeder had him on pellets after weaning. I have listed on my site many different parrot seed and pellet diets and what each offers and where to buy if that helps you at all. Best of luck and I hope your little guy gives you as much joy as mine does for me. :senegal:

Hello there, congrats on getting your new Senegal, they're great birds!

I have a Senegal, too, and she eats fresh fruit, veggies, nuts, and some scrambled egg (minus milk), pasta and/or rice, and bits of chicken. I also feed Tiki strawberries from my garden. The Avian Vet we see also recommends breads, which Tiki loves. It's not expensive to feed her at all; a bag of baby carrots will last you a long time, and one organic kiwi fruit will feed her for nearly a week. I slice a bit for her, then wrap it up, and put it in the fridge.

Tiki's diet is mostly fresh foods, although of course she gets a pellet mix, as well, that I buy from Portland's Bird Hut (they have great supplies). Her pellet mix is a mix of seeds, nuts, and dried fruit. There are some peanuts in the mix which I take out as I'm paranoid about feeding her peanuts.

A good mixture of foods is best, with a pellet mix secondary to fresh foods. Just be sure to never feed the no-no stuff that can hurt your bird.

If you need some help getting pellet mix, I can help you by picking up the great mix I give Tiki, and we can do business. Message me if you're interested.
