Feeding help please!(parakeets)

Postby Ashleighdale » Sun Apr 01, 2012 1:29 pm

Does anyone have any suggestions on getting a parakeet to eat fresh fruits and veggies!? I've tried everything! They inspect it, and abruptly walk away. At first I thought it would just take time, but as time has gone by (SEVEN MONTHS!) nothings changed. They look and act healthy but I know it is very important for them to have the fresh food in their diets. This was never an issue with my other two birds so I am lost :(

my birds won't touch raw veggies so i steam them.mya :corella: is not a fan of fruit but she like hot food so i give her plain baked apples or warm apple sauce still trying to figure out how to get her to try a variety, i can sneek other fruit into her yogurt but she can't have yogurt everyday.

I think Ill give the steamed veggies a try. It never occurred to me to try applesauce either! What brand do you feed to Mya? And yogurt?! Is there special birdie yogurt or just plain human yogurt?! The trouble with my boys is that, like small children, they want to put their little beaks on everything EXCEPT the things that are good for them!!!!!!!!!

I would make mash! I run a bunch of veggies and pasta through the food processor until everything gets as fine as it gets. Then I add some cooked rice/barley and a tiny bit of seed. :)

they prefer plain human but it's only like a once or twice a week just to change routine a little yogurt is good but not everyday.i make the sauce from apples they'll only eat it hot, but if yours will eat cool i would just look for anything with no sugar.

Hello again everyone! Thanks for all the great suggestions on getting my birdies to eat healthy! So far I have gotten to try Steamed broc. and applesauce. My little Jackie really seems to like both! But Charlie doesn't and because Charlie isn't eating it Jack won't eat it! They boys are extremely close, i don't know their full history but i do know they came home from PetSmart together and have been raised as brothers these past two years! Is is possible that Charlie is "telling" Jack not to eat it!?!?! I would separate them, but when their apart, they just cry for one another and try to get back to each other and it breaks my heart. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
