Storing food

Postby Crazypetlady » Wed Apr 04, 2012 12:38 pm

How does everyone store their pet food ?

The bags that the pellets come in really really suck. The zip lock feature is very poor quality and the bag is never 100% sealed. I have used large zip lock bags to put the entire bags into, but this hasn't worked out so well for me. My dogs have been known to tear these things open and eat all the bird food!!! Yes, I know I could put these bags where the dogs can't get to them, but you don't know my dogs!!

I've been looking around amazon for cheap plastic storage containers but they seem so big and space hoggish. I figured I'd ask around before committing to any solution online sight unseen. I already know what my local stores carry and I'm not fond of those options.

Thanks!

How much do you need to store? wouldn't a cheap plastic food container from the supermarket do the job, I use the type that are labeled for cereals for seeds, though I dont use the pour tops when I get them out I take the lid off fully otherwise theres a big mess lol.

I feel a deja vu here, but basically, I have just recently started buying bigger packages myself.
The savings are almost absurd, the 2lbs bags are so ridiculously overpriced.
I was thinking on how to store it since our new 8lbs packages are too big to be used within a few weeks. Turned out that they are already in 2lbs bags, rather than a big bag, so it was problem solved for me.

The bags that Nutribird pellets come in are 100% moistproof, and pellets are gauranteed to be good for 1 year after production (unless opened), and as far as I am aware, there are no preservers added. =)

I had never thought of buying food in bulk and freezing it!! Wow, and anything that saves THAT much money is awesome.

This is one place you save a lot of money, especially when you have multiple birds cause then it goes quicker.

Some more ways to save money on bird food (while supplying the best kind):

1) Get all your parrots onto the same pellet so you only have to buy one kind
2) Provide them only as much as they're actually going to eat (and believe it or not, it's not much at all. Usually not even enough to line 1/3 the bottom of a typical food bowl) cause the rest is just gonna get thrown out
3) Refeed leftovers from the previous meal. Unless they soiled it, pellets won't go bad in the span of the day

Taking these economy measures into consideration can save hundreds of dollars on bird food at no cost/sacrifice to the bird and that way you can afford to buy a better kind.
