Timneh - sick/stressed or just tired???

Postby TimnehGirl » Sat Apr 07, 2012 7:39 am

Hi all!!!! I have a (?male) Timneh :gray: unknown age (suspect young adult) unknown history (he was found) We have had him for about 2 months now. He has settled in very well, become very vocal, eating etc etc. He has not become hand tame as yet but will interact with us quite happily.
However, for the past 3 days he has become very quiet, sleeping a lot, not moving around his cage or playing with toys & hardly vocalising at all. He is not fluffed up, still eating/drinking, poo looks normal, there is no respiratory effort/noise or discharge from eyes/nostrils.

We have been letting him out of his cage in the evenings (supervised of course!) The evening before this episode of lethargy he had spent quite a lot of time flying about, then was difficult to catch. Did this just stress him out??? What else could be wrong???

We live in Cyprus & I have not been able to locate an avian vet here (or one particularly confident with birds) or he would have gone straight to the vet. I am still trying to find a vet ..........

Thanks in advance

Get him to an ordinary vet if need be, any vets better than no vet for now. They probably won't do alot but you need to insist that you've been unable to find an expert nearby and is there any experts they can contact for advice on what to do and how to do it. A good vet doesn't have to have bags of experience and a list of qualifications the size of a dictionary (although it helps) but they must be willing to learn and seek advice. Good luck and keep looking for an avian vet, post on every bird site you can find asking for reccommendations.

Hope your birdy is ok.

If he was like that for a single day it might be possible to justify it as "just having a bad day", change of weather, or whatever. However, if you see a stark contrast to earlier behavior for several days now, you should take him to the vet. Could be illness or injury, they handle both in a similar way.

Thanks for the replies. Having sat & watched his behaviour for a while I think he has probably bumped his head while he's been out  He seems to be uncoordinated & unsure when trying to maneouvre his way around the cage
Will continue to keep an eye on him while I try & locate a suitably qualified vet

Pleased to say that Spike is pretty much back to normal now, just a bit more wary about venturing from his cage !!!
