Senegal throwing up?

Postby alliethebirdnerd » Wed Apr 11, 2012 7:07 pm

I have a 1 yr old senegal, who i have noticed throws up after maybe a little too much loving. its not the normal regurgitation, its actual vomiting, spewing out. I'm no novice to birds, i raise baby birds as part of my job so i am no stranger to crop infections and other diseases. in fact, the reason i got this one was because i "rescued" him from a pet store when he was 3 months old suffering from a pretty bad e. coli infection. he has no diarrhea or normal vomiting. i have a hunch about this behavior. at night, i notice, he likes to "stuff" himself before going to bed to the point where his crop is full. it's always empty in the morning so no crop infection, this is just a habit he's always had. sometimes at night i will snuggle with him and give him lots of kisses, so i'm wondering if maybe the reason he throws up is because i am kissing him (and his crop) maybe a little too hard? maybe it's a little more affection than he can normally take when he's so stuffed... this has only happened twice and its always when i'm lovin on him. no diarrhea, irregular vomiting, anything like that. its usually just whatever he just ate spewing out when i give him lots of kisses. has anyone else had this happen? i am taking him to the vet anyway, but just wondering if this is a normal occurrence. i've never seen it happen before. maybe i love my baby too much =P :senegal:

When in doubt, consult a vet.

Exactly what and how much are you feeding him? Does he ever throw up NOT when you've been handling him?

he gets zupreem & harrisons pellets, fresh fruit & vegetables daily. He LOVES apples, and whenever he throws up its always a lot of apples coming up so i think he likes to stuff himself with those before he goes to bed. no, he doesn't throw up besides when i'm handling him. i really think its just from his crop, not from his stomach because it's different from when he was sick. when he was sick as a baby he had diarrhea, was very thin, & you could tell that the puke was actually from his stomach. this is all right out of his crop because he literally stuffs his crop until its HUGE at night, every night. i'm almost positive its from me handling him, because this has only happened twice & its only when I'm snuggling with him. obviously, I'm gonna give my avian vet a call, i'm pretty close to her anyway. i was just wondering if this has ever happened to anyone else.

Hasn't happened but if he is really eating so much that he can't keep it down, it's not healthy. For starters scale things back a little bit and be careful where you're touching him.

my vet said the same thing when he had his last visit a week ago (before the throwing up). i brought it up because he has a habit of wasting food (throwing pellets everywhere) so i have been scaling it back. he's a little piglet maybe i'll take his fruit away a little earlier and see how that helps. i really don't play rough with him i just think its because he's so stuffed. he really is a sweetie & loves snuggling with me.

Okay...My best guess is that he is eating for YOU and he is trying to feed you.

If he thinks you are his "mate" that's what the boys do. Jack does this with Babylon, his girlfriend. He eats and chews everything in his cage all day and when I let them out together in the evening, he follows Babylon around and he feeds her. A normal male will want to show a "prospective mate" that he would be a good provider. Their job is to take care of the hen while she is on the nest so they tend to do a lot of chewing and a lot of eating.
Feeding the hen is also part of their mating ritual....so, I think your little guy is just trying to impress you.
Of course, it never hurts to have a vet take a look so you can rule out infections....

Thx
