JJ is to skinny?

Postby jenn » Fri Apr 20, 2012 9:09 am

Hello, JJ and I are new here.
JJ is my new green cheek Conure. He was supposed to be weaned when I bought him from a breeder that I thought was registered and found out is not :(. When we first brought him home he did not eat very much and seemed to not try much food that I offered. (his poop was orange as well) I went in search of some parrot parents and a vet tech that told me he was not fully weaned yet, that I needed to feed JJ some formula and try offering him foods first in my lips then if he ate them in his dish. The food part has worked great as he now eats grapes, strawberries, fresh peas, boiled eggs, parsley and assorted beans that I make for him. He also eats a mixture of pellets, with seeds and dried fruit. I can not get him to eat the formula however. I was petting him down the other day and he lifted his wings for a rub as well, when I noticed it is all boney there, almost his whole chest is. I can't tell by looking at him and he seems to eat and have lots of energy, his poop is also green now but I feel as he is to small... is he?
Help please, I plan on having JJ around for a long time!
I watch him when ever he is out and do not think he got into anything....
I know JJ would like any help we can get Thanks :) :gcc:

Unless it's extreme, you couldn't tell if a parrot is skinny/fat just by looking at it or holding it. It is mainly a factor of weight and plumpness around the keel bone. As the bird is still very young, just continue introducing him to foods and let him eat all he wants.

How much does he weigh? Maxx looks small, but when I weigh him, he is between 65-66g. Normal GCC weight is 60-80g.

Thank you both for answering us.
JJ is 2.3 ounces which I think works out to 65.2 grams.
I guess I am just being overly worried.
JJ is our first parrot and I want to make sure he is as healthy as he can be.

You could try going to formula twice a day until he is eating good and starting to gain weight. It would not hurt him in any way. Then cut pack to one time then none. He would probably like some warm formula.

I have the formula, I just can not seem to get him to eat it... which does not make sense. Maybe I am making it to runny or maybe to thick... what is the consistency is it supposed to be?
I was going to try making it and baking it for like a cookie treat would that work?
Thanks for all the help!
