Ultra Shield

Postby jaimmorr » Wed Apr 25, 2012 4:23 pm

We are getting a new couch on Friday. We were asked if we wanted a product called "Ultra Shield" applied to the fabric. It supposedly helps prevent staining. The lady sprayed it on a napkin and then poured water on the napkin, and the water ran right off without soaking in at all. I was quite impressed, and decided I wanted to get it applied to the couch.

I went back into the furniture store a week later to set up a pick up time, etc. I noticed that they had a poster on their wall that said "Teflon" with a little boy eating chocolate ice cream on a couch. It was for a fabric protection product. Was this the brand name or what? So, I asked the lady at the counter if the Ultra Shield had Teflon in it. She said she had no clue and that I should call the company. Today I called the company and asked if their product has Teflon in it. The man said "No, it does not." I asked, "Are you sure?" and he said "Yes, ma'am, I'm sure."

I wouldn't see why it would have Teflon in it, but I plan to have this couch for awhile and am hoping to get a bird sometime in the future. Do you think I should be worried? Even if it does have Teflon in it, it only is toxic when heated, correct? Seeing as how we're not going to be heating our couch, I don't think it would be toxic, but I really don't want to cause harm to any future bird.

Thanks!

That stuff may be toxic if a parrot chews on it regardless if it has teflon in it or not. No idea what its composition is but keep that in mind. Parrots love chewing couches. I wouldn't be so concerned about liquid stains on a couch when there's a parrot around to do much worse!

Good point. I was just thinking that that would be quite helpful for poop messes!

It says in the pamphlet that it is safe for children and pets, but I don't know if that includes birds. :?

I think I'll call and pester them again and ask.

michael is right getting any thing to protect from stains is pointless if your getting a bird.poop is not that hard to clean anyway and you can potty train.

Well, if it's not going to hurt anything, it can't hurt to try, right?

Tried calling the company, but they're closed. Guess I'll call tomorrow.

Might be a better idea to put a throw/blanket of a similar colour over your sofa if your that worried about poop. That way you can just pull it off and stick it in your washing when needed.

I'm not worried about poop lol. I understand that poop is part of the package :P But I figure, if that stuff isn't going to harm anyone, why not give it a try?

Well, I called the first time and was told NO Teflon what so ever goes into their product. I then called again today and talked to the head of customer service (lol) and she told me that after the product cures for 3 days, it is 100% safe for kids and all animals. She said even if your dog eats the whole couch, the Ultra Shield won't make it sick. I said, "What about birds? Their systems are much more sensitive than a dog or a human." She said, "It's safe for birds as well, because after the 3 day curation period it actually bonds with the fabric and cannot be rubbed off or cleaned off, ever." So, we went ahead and got it. Thanks for everyone's comments!
