Ringneck Regurgitations

Postby Pralina » Sun Apr 29, 2012 8:06 pm

Hi everyone,

I did some research on the subject but I decided, why not submit it to you.

Many people seem to have the same issue with indian parakeets in hormonal periods: regurgitation. However I haven't found any clear solutions that could work for me.

Pesho, the old alexandrine boy, has started to regurgitate after we adopted him 5-6 years ago. Of course, since he is feather picking, we have encouraged him ever since to be more sociable, less scared of everything, and his sexual behaviors have reborn ever since: he regurgitates with his foot in his beak and to some favorite ball toys.
With time, we have learned to remove gradually the toys he regurgitates to, one by one, until the hormones are back to normal.

The problem we are having though is our young teenager, Akilles the indian ringneck. :irn:
When we resued Akilles he was a baby, 8 months old, and while growing up he learned most of his behaviors from big brother Pesho: flock calls but ALSO sexual behaviors.
Nowadays, and for the first time this year, Akilles has been masturbating on toys, regurgitating to toys, AND regurgitating just about anywhere else, on perches, onto metal cage screws, in his cage, on top of his cage.... pretty much everywhere. :?
He can spend 1 hour there regurgitating onto something and eating it back, then he goes in a food bowl and eats some food, then goes back to regurgitating....

This starts worrying me, especially because he is in perfect health and perhaps such frequent regurgitation could create acidity, and also clean up is virtually impossible because there is "puke" everywhere. I can remove the toys he "loves" but how do I remove the perches or the cagetop he "loves" so much too?
Usually Akilles keeps busy on his own, like a real bird should, but now how do I make him forget about regurgitating and do something else for a change?

thank you all for reading! :)

Might be worth getting him to the vet for a health check if he is regurgitating every time he eats, if it's just once a day or so I wouldn't worry too much as he should still be getting the nutrients he needs from his food.
Regarding the toys, perches etc it may be worth rearranging his cage frequently, removing favoured toys for a while but don't deprive him, keep putting them back in for short periods of time after a while. Put them in different places, give him plenty of new things to do but remove them in exchange for something else before he becomes overfamiliar with them. If he is that bad it may be needed to do this every couple of days but see how it goes cuz rearranging an entire cage is a faft without having to do it most days... Also changing stuff round too frequently may upset him if he isn't used to it.
Does he have a particular spot on top of his cage that he favours for regurgitaing onto? it might be worth covering it with something for the time being, maybe some paper, a towell or other object?

I'm no expert on this at all, only one of my 'tiel has ever regurgitated and that was all over his favorite bell. We took it out for a week and that solved the problem, he was fine once he got it back but we did change his toys round more often after that.
