Quaker parrot issues and flock calling

Postby xxarmando » Sat May 05, 2012 9:30 pm

Hello everyone my wife and I have had our quaker parrot Luna for about 4 months. She is an amazing bird and we love her to death but we need a few tips on her and things that are worrying us. She is believed to be about 8 months old now.

-First The flock calling. Whenever my wife and I leave the room she begins to scream or call out to us.We usually pick to say luna and call back to her but we persists to scream. We have ignored her until she stops screaming and then come back in but she just continues. We want to know if it is possible to stop the flock calling.

-Next luna is clipped we have not clipped her again since we bought her from the breeder. Her tail was also cut by the breeder and I noticed this when i purchased her yet I wanted to take her away from this breeder because Luna immediately bonded with my wife and I.

-Luna is clicker trained knows how to do wings, lays on her back, waves and turns.she trains everyday once a day.Her treats are sunflower seeds.

-Luna has a diet of zupreem entrees non colored pellets. She was weaned on seeds and soon was switched over to pellets by my wife and I. She eats lettuce, cheerios, dried fruits, apples, strawberries and wheat bread. She also gets sunflower seeds as treats.

-She goes to sleep every night around 9:30-10:00 pm and sleeps until 8:30-9:30am.

-When we first purchased luna from the breeder she was incredibly friendly. She would step up with most people and let the touch her. Now no one can touch her except My wife and I. She is not aggressive to the point that she wants to bite everyone. She just does not like being held or touched by anyone that is not my wife and I.Luna hates my brother and we do not know why. In the begining she was very friendly to him and then my brother purchased a cockatiel. It all went downhill from their and now she hates him and he cant even get near her too much.Luna is always in my room and my brothers room is nextdoor with his cockatiel. Luna is aggressive towards my brothers cockatiel. On both occassions of their meetings luna has ripped off a few of his feathers. They are not on the best of terms.

-We do believe she is molting and she gets a daily bath. She likes to shower and really enjoys it she also enjoys bathing in a shallow dish inside of her cage. She talks non stop when she hears water running.

-When luna is screaming we take a clean water bottle and gentle spray her with it and tell her luna shh. We also tell her luna be a good girl. That usually calms her and leaves her to quietly play on her own.Yet soon after she begins again the screaming until she is entertained again by her toys. She has many toys and we buy her different ones almost weekly. She also has a small java playgym and enjoys sitting on it next to the window. She lives in an apartment and we take her out to get sun often she also enjoys being by the window for a while during the day.

-We do believe that luna has stress marks on her wings and are going to post a picture.

-Our biggest worry with luna is that she is out of her cage most of the day. She is also always with us.My wife and I are college students and when we got her we were both out of work for a while. My wife is now going to start working from home and I am going to start working again. We dont know what to do. Were slowely getting her used to being in my brothers room for a few hours a day while my wife works. She is in the same room that his cockatiel is in and she is placed in his room along with her cage and playgym. She will be out of her cage in my brothers room most of the time.We dont know what to do to keep her quiet while my wife works. Also We dont know what to do to keep her quiet without us being their for long periods of time. What do you guys do when your at work all day? Do you think I should get her a mate?

Thanks so much for all of your help Below I have posted pictures of her cage, java tree, and what we believe to be stress marks. Thanks so much again

it's best not to respond at all to the flock call wait for her to make a noise you like to respond,if your in the room when she does it turn you head away it'll take time but she'll get it.is the cockatiel flighted?when penny :gcc: was flighted and mya :corella: was not she would try to kill penny every time he came near when she gained flight she stopped now they can be on me at the same time no problem.does she attack the :greycockatiel: in your brother's room?they should be introduced in nuetral territory away from toys, cages or anything else they see as belonging to them.

Do NOT get her a mate. I have 2 quakers and made the mistake of letting them share a cage as I had noticed they seemed to be very fond of each other and got along great. WELL...now I can't touch them, and they attack me when I service their cage. they scream at me and try to bite me when i replace food and water too. I tried separating them and she seemed ok but soon her feathers looked different, and he hid in the snuggle hut ( that he never used before but she did) and screamed whenever i was in the room. I hope someone has some ideas for me 'cause at this point I am at my wits end.

the only idea i can come up with is take the hut away and anything they can hide in together it puts them in the mood and let them be around eachother see if that helps.
