Is my lovebird okay?

Postby ZooMom » Mon May 07, 2012 5:56 pm

My 14 year old lovebird is suddenly keeping her head cocked to one side. She straightens it for fleeting moments; she is still able to eat, drink, and perch. No other symptoms. Personality hasn't changed. Before I call the vet, was wondering if anyone has experienced this before. I've been reading about bird seizures but I watch her pretty closely and I've seen no rigidity, wing flapping, weird noises.

Also, I have asked and read from a gazillion different sources and can't seem to get a consensus on lovebird life span. I've seen/heard everything from 12 years to 25 years? Opinions out there? Thanks! :swaying:

No idea about lifespan but I guess with such a long lived species its difficult to get a good average hence the big gap. I would probably say for most people who's birds are well cared for and have no health problems it would be the middle -middle end of the scale.
I think your bird needs to see an avian vet, there may be nothing that can be done but it could be something that can be stopped from getting worse or treated.

Thanks for your input. When I got home today, she still looked the same plus now her chest looks chubbier. My mind is in high gear thinking tumor, abcess, etc but I called the vet and will be bringing her in tomorrow. Like you said, it may be nothing serious but she needs to be seen. Let's hope for the best ;)

Took CJ to the vet. She has cataracts in both eyes but physically, nothing else is wrong that they can tell. Dr. did say that she suspects a brain lesion in early stages that may be affecting her equilibrium causing her to tilt her head. And when I checked my records, she is 15, not 14 yrs old! If she is nearing the end of her life, I am very glad to have had that 15 years. Also, Happy Mother's Day to me...my baby ring neck is finally weaned and ready to come home tomorrow! :hatched:
