Abnormal poop?...

Postby Boman » Sat May 12, 2012 9:57 am

Hey all.

Joey is our 10 month old Brown headed parrot and I've noticed that at random times the urine in his droppings has a yellowish tint to it. He's eats Harrison's high potency pellets, with random treats that consist of Harrison's power treats, Nutriberries, and avi-cakes. We regularly feed him fruits and veggies as well. There has been no change in his behavior, the way he looks, or weight (we got him at 3 months old @ 134g - he is still 134g). He very energetic during the day and mellow when the sun is down. I've read that this could be liver disease? But would we not see ANY change in weight, behavior, appetite?

Thanks for the help!

- Boman

I should add that we only see this in his HUGE morning poop lol.. it's fine during the day - altho sometimes a little on the watery side.

Continue to keep a close eye on the droppings... it may be a good idea to call an Avian Vet in your area just to be sure.

I'm an inexperienced parrot owner as the new mum to a Senegal, but the Avian vet told me the other day that black droppings is the big worry, and if you ever see black droppings to take the bird in right away.

Yes, black droppings are very bad, it´s an indication for internal bleeding and that requires a vet immidiately. Yellow urine can be a sign of liver disease. Read more: http://www.avianweb.com/poopology.html and http://www.birdtricks.com/blog/what-your-parrots-poop-can-tell-you/

I don´t know much about Avi cakes or Nutriberries, but when I Googled it I found the ingredients lists and there´s a lot of questionable things in both (sugar, ethoxyquin, menadione, arificial colors...). Personnally, I think a fresh diet with vegetables and some fruit is preferable, with pellets and perhaps some seeds and nuts as complement.
