How long to offer food?

Postby Grey_Moon » Sat May 19, 2012 6:26 pm

Okay so as part of me transitioning Jacko onto a fresh-food pellet-less diet I'm going to start the twice daily feedings of pellets (she'll be starting the mash when I get paid as I still need to pick up the multivitamin and fresh produce).
I'm also doing this to avoid huge messes in the cage (she cements pellet crumbles *everywhere*) and will be offering her bowl instead on the nightstand where she roosts, or the table we eat at.

I'm already plannin on feeding her when we wake, and at dinner, but how long does one leave out food? Not in the to avoid spoilage sense, but to give her enough time to eat her fill. For example the rule with Dogs is leaving the bowl down for 10-15 minutes at most. What about parrots? Because obviously I don't want to turn it into me leaving it down for four hours while she snacks intermittently at her leisure. Plus lol I'd have to return her to her day cage eventually---need to go to class at some point.

Fancy cat eats slower than the other cats.

Bruce and Chloe eat slower than the other dogs.

My tiels pick all day long.

Rambo eats about 3 times a day but Myrtle is non stop.

Fresh food left for 4 hours is okay but any longer and it will wilt.
