New siblings, unusual feather tips

Postby AuraKiwi&Jala » Thu May 31, 2012 11:33 am

Hello everyone
I few days ago I adopted green cheek "triplets" from a local pet store. When I saw them I couldn't t bare the thought of someone separating them as they seems to bonded
Anyhow, the are calm and playful and I suspect training will be relatively smooth.
My concern is the feathers, ( they are clipped) all their feathers are smooth but have a smokey , grey , uneven edge ( no stress bars)....any thoughts please....
Gratefully, Kasia and the kids; Jala, Kiwi and Aura

I would have posted pictures but can t seem to do this with ipad

Are the colour mutations? mine is a yellowside and has the same colour 'edge' to the feathers, I don't know about normals or other mutations though. Neither vet I have seen has commented on them and one examined some of his feathers closely.
The feathers should have a kind of smooth flowing edge if that makes sense so that it's sort of gently curving into a tip, It's quite normal for birds that have been kept in small cages (like in a petshop) to become a bit damaged though and look a bit straggly or if they play roughly together alot.
Nutritional issues can sometimes cause poor feather condition but I wouldn't worry too much if you have put them on a good diet since they have come to you, the condition will improve over time. Also they may be neglecting preening properly as they are in a new environment or are quite young but they will start again if they have stopped, it took most of my birds a few months to start preening properly (most were rescued and highly unsettled though), before that they seemed to do a quick run through their feathers with no real ''care'' put into them.

In all instances I wouldn't worry unless the new feathers come through in poor condition when they moult.

Thank you Mary, nothing in their behavior indicates a problem, they preen each other several times a day the edge of the feather doesn t seem damaged, just looks as if it grew that way , jagged with evenly smokey tips. Thank you for you response, your right, time will tell :gcc: it might be diet...
Have a lovely day
