Declined flight capability during molt.

Postby cml » Fri Jun 01, 2012 12:33 pm

Leroy is molting, something I've mentioned in a few other threads I think. He's lost a few primaries on each wing now, and is noticably flying worse than he did. This was most apparent today when he didnt make it to the top of a bookshelf in our living room, which is his favorite spot to hang out. Instead he crashed into the upmost shelf, actually landing behind the books.

I had to get him out of there, he was so scared!

Anyway, as the topic says, he seems to have less lifting power at the moment, and I am wondering what your experiences are of this?
Is it better to restrict out of cage time a little, or should I continue as normal?

Cheers.

Eh, it sux. Truman broke 2 primary feathers on one wing + molted primaries on each wing (see photo on facebook). He's not flying as well as before and much more reluctant to flight recall cause it's more work. They get over it eventually but it takes a toll in the beginning.

Oh, I hope they grow back quickly, I read that you had spotted a pin feather, so hopefully it will back soon!

Do you reccommend clipping a broken feather (I noticed you had done just that)? Leroy had a couple, but they have molted now, being replaced by new ones I hope. I was just thinking for future reference?
(Not that Leroy is letting me grab his wings yet, but still, taming is progressing good all things considered and when we get there its good to know! So far I can hold him over his back, but not actually grab him, wings are off limits still)

Truman's broken feather was dangling and pointing the other way. It was inevitably gonna break off... why not just cut it cleanly so the rest is left intact. On the other hand when they're not too bad I leave them.
