6 week old Senegals refusing to eat

Postby Paulsmom » Fri Jun 01, 2012 8:13 pm

I have two 6 week old baby Senegals that are refusing to take their formula either by syringe or spoon. They have been eating great up to this point and have suddenly just stopped. I don't want to force the food and chance them aspirating...any ideas??

I have been raising Senegals for 2 years and have never had this happen in any of my other clutches. They are eating a little of the softened pellets and some sprouts but not nearly enough to keep their weight up.

sounds like you have way more experience than I do. I was able to have my first time weaning a sun conure. She was 8 weeks when I bought her .I did formula for about 2 weeks then she started to refuse it.I always did pellet seed and fruit in her cage .But she didnt take a real interest in them until I hung one of those honey seed things [she went to town on it] Then she really was interested in the rest of the food. Good Luck to you :D

Have you opened some new formula? might be they changed the recipe or this one is off or something. You may need to try another batch or different brand.

A vet check and/or a chat with another breeder may be useful. If you can't find a senegal breeder then find one who raises a similar species. I know a senegal breeder who's e-mail address I can pass on, he is a lovely guy and I'm sure he would be willing to help you. PM me if you need it.

I don't think there are many on here who breed so your chances of good advice are fairly slim.

Good luck

I agree with the others. I was part of the weaning process as part of my introduction to my Senegal from the breeder. This was 10 years ago and i remember him starting to refuse his too and was taking more of the pellet food that was always available to him. Then one day he just turned his beak up and would only eat his pellet food. I unfortunatley cannot offer any more advice then the others gave except i agree with consulting a breeder, avian vet or research online. Best of luck and I hope to hear a good outcome from this. :senegal:
