Postby ljeanne » Wed Jun 06, 2012 11:17 pm

my congo grey, romeo, flings his food out of the bowl and fills the bottom of his cage with food. he seems to want to eat it later but can't reach it. i was thinking about putting a tray under his dish so he can forage or ground feed but he poops alot in that area too. any ideas? :gray: :amazon:

forgot to mention my bf amazon is so neat he puts his chewed up wood fragments in his food dish.lol

mmm its good idea to put the tray down of their cage.but you need to always careful the tray always clean.personaly i never let my birds to forage down of their cage because its dirty and sometimes there is ants there.i always clean the bottom cage after she throw all her food so she dsnt see any food down there that she can forage :D
once there was an ant down of her cage(i dont realize it) and it disturb her like crazy.after that happen i never let her to play down there anymore.

Your food dish might be too deep. I use cat feeders with shallow pans. Rambo likes to pick out his favorite first and go back later for the other. He uses his beak to flick out what is in his way. I use trays like the ones in hotels. (That is the only thing I have ever stolen but I leave a big tip for the cleaning lady)

I also use layers of news paper in the bottom. As I go by during the day I pull a layer off. Poop sticks to it but his stash of food falls to the next layer.

I put a large piece of plywood on top of their cage as a play patio. I put shallow dog dishes on top with their fresh foods that need changed during the day. When I have something new to give them as I am cooking - I replace the oldest dish on the top. That way they always have a fresh supply of something to look forward to.

I feed from the bottom of my cage BUT I do daily spot cleans and a total clean every second day and my bowls arent placed under common roosting areas.

i came across some bin feeders like for rabbits at a great discount and have now placed it in the bottom of his cage with his pellets to see if this works for him,,,i figured that the dust from pellets would sift out and his pellet supply would be clean. also for the timneh that poops in his dish. i'll let you know how it works out. :gray: :amazon:

Its funny my male caique is so neat he poops in his water dish.I even moved it [I thought maybe it was too under a perch] But he still does it :D He also keeps his chewed through food in his dish. Now my female caique I swear smears her fruit on every bar in her cage . [especially berries] and she insists on keeping this little rubber ducky toy in her water,Which cracks my kids up  Where I buy my bird supplies they sell this metel bar to make kabobs with.Ive always wanted to try it.That might be an idea.

Rambo slings spagetti off his beak instead of wiping it off.

Myrtle is the messiest eater. Although she manages to get the food off her beak and eat it I found spagetti on top of the refridgerator.

Have to say all my birds apart from the conures have been pretty tidy eaters. The conures however like to make soup and poop in their water. The pooping was resolved by moving the water dispensers right up high in the cage but they still carry food up there to put in it!
Out of all the birds Ollie is by far the messiest, he grinds up his pellets into a powder, mushes up his fruit and veg and flings it at the walls and wipes the rest all over his cage bars and perches. I think a childs food fight is far less messy....

Leroy by far.

He's started with this really bad habit of putting his pellets in the water bowl, to soften them. This means I have to change his water many times everyday, rather than just at morning and afternoon!
