Bird and cold

Postby xxlazaro » Fri Jun 08, 2012 11:05 am

Hello I have two cockatiels and I was simply wondering do birds die of a cold or not? I was wondering if anyone knew. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks :) :greycockatiel: :greycockatiel:

If you think your birds are sick you really should get them to an avian vet ASAP, it could be a respiratory infection, it could be anything really.

Do you think your birds have caught one, if so I would try to speak to an avian vet as soon as you can (certainly in next 24 hours)cuz respiritory infections can kill a bird.
All the bird books I've ever read say to stay away from your bird when you have a cold. However thats not practical really for most people. I just go by how bad my symptoms are, if I'm sneezing and coughing like mad I wash my hands well and just do food and water, if I'm not sneezing and coughing much then they come out with me but I try to encourage them to do things away from me. If they sit wth me then I make sure I'm clean, wearing fresh clothes and avoid breathing on them or excessive petting.
None of my birds have ever caught a cold even though I get them frequently, also I've never heard of another bird getting a 'human' cold but thats not to say they can't get one.
