Both parrots are now eating the new pellets!

I just received a 4lb bag of TOPS in the mail today, reminds me of rabbit food, LOL...

Well my GCC took to it right away, but for Winnie the mynah most of the pellets are pretty big so I had to spend some time cutting them up to make them smaller.

So far she doesn't seem to like them, but to bad Winnie you're going to have to get use to them, LOL, no more Harrisons junk for my birds!

Have you tried making bird bread out of TOPs? Grey Moon posted a recipe for bird muffins using TOPs as a base, and the end result is really moist and not crumbly at all. I've been making bird mash with them too, and squishing them up with sweet potatoes, broccoli, and carrots.

I actually agree with Cage Cleaner vis-a-vis the cons of TOPS.

Iiiiiinteresting. I did not know that.

Why is it not a good idea to feed a bird a uniform diet?

These are all true, but it was a degree of 'best worst case' vis a vis the bird bread.

I myself am moving away from bird bread/pellets due to this.

She still gets low-heat baked veggies/fruit mash because she won't readily eat other textures and obviously cooked veggies/fruits is better than no veggies/fruits.

My girl is being put on 50% china prairie sprout diet and 50% veggie/fruits mash.

Uniformity in diet is bad for a few reasons, namely lack of diversity of nutrients and live enzymes. Pellets are poor nutrition in terms of being cheap grain by-products with all sorts of synthetic vitamins n preservatives and cooked. It would be like us living on nothing but meal replacement bars---we could---but its certainly inferior (except when its that vs junk food) to a varied healthy diet.

Okay, that all makes sense.

Almost all of the vegetables that Scrubby eats are raw, except for sweet potatoes (for obvious reasons). She loves sweet potatoes, so we make them for her a lot because they're such a good source of vitamin A. We always bake them and never add sugar or anything to them.

This conversation is making me wonder what temperature we should be baking them at, though? I believe, we usually bake them at 400°. Is that killing off most of the nutrients in the vegetable?
