Meat?

Postby paper_lantern » Mon Jun 18, 2012 3:40 pm

I know that it would not be good to give a parrot meat every day, but is once in awhile alright?

I would never give Chubby red meat, or processed meat (sandwich meat, hot dogs, etc). But today I was boiling some chicken and gave him a tiny bite as a snack. Is this alright? What about fish?

I assume some lean meats may be a good source of protein. Anyway, is once in awhile as a treat or snack ok? Or should it just be avoided altogether?

My opinion would be just to feed your Parrot meat once a week. And I don't know about fish... I would either give it chicken or pieces of some scrambled eggs. Remember to cook with non-stick pans when cooking your bird food! :D I hope you find this somewhat helpful!!

As far as I've experienced, chicken, eggs and bits of fish (good luck getting it eaten though---Jacko won't touch fish) are a-ok as long as they're lean and cooked properly.
I'll also admit that Jacko likes to pilfer the ground turkey or pork I use in sphaghetti sauce.
As its a tiny treat and not that often I would say the animal protein (I read somewhere that like with us parrots absorb animal protein better vs plant protein) is good for her.

How often or if its beneficial to your bird I think depends on the bird. I have a groundfeeding species (which apparently has been seen feeding on carrion) that inhabits a grasslands type of environment---most groundfeeding species end up probably consuming some sort insect. She is also underweight and lacking muscle, as well as being a rescue bird (long years of malnutrition) so she benefits from extra protein to repair internal damage and help feather condition.
A baby congo grey who has received perfect care may not benefit or appreciate (being denser rainforest birds) all the extra protein, even though they too groundfeed.
IF though for example you had an Eclectus, animal protein would be better left as an occaisional treat as these birds have longer herbivore-style guts designed to eat a lot of fruit and vegetable matter--and meat fementing in herbivore guts is bad.

Further, you've got to watch signs of overload---if the beak and nails start growing like mad--cut back and balance the protein. If beaks start flaking and chipping and feathers don't look so good add a bit in.
