Bird ate something he wasn't supposed to

My bird was in the shower with me and he flew off his shower perch onto a little metal basket thing I keep around the shower head to hold my shampoos and things like that. I figured this was ok because I always remove the contents in the basket before I bring him in the shower. But since he was not showing an interest in splashing around I figured he was getting into mischeif, and he was. When I turned around I saw him picking off pieces of soap that we're left on the basket after I took the bar of soap itself out I don't know if he was actually eating it or just picking it off. My question is, is this very bad for him, should I call his vet? Or will he be ok?
I'm still new at being my birds companion and I feel like a 1st time mom must feel because I freak out about every little thing and am constantly calling the bird shop where I got him from or his vets office, but I would appreciate your help with this question, thanks!

Bit late for any advice now but I hope you rang the vets for advice. What did they say and is your bird ok at the mo?
