Annual Avian Vet Exam

$270 later I have good news...Chico's blood and fecal tests are negative!
$70 annual exam, $30 fecal test, $170 blood test

Is a fecal and blood panel necessary next year if there are no symptoms?
If so, I will have to get him signed up under my Kaiser plan

Depends on your vet, some prefer to run the tests to pick up early signs of illness or to make a base record to compare future examinations/tests to. Also depends on you if you think the stress of blood being taken is worth it. The faeces tests aren't stressful though so I would go for them personally but it does depend on what tests the vets are running on them as to whether you feel it's worth the money.

Have a chat to your vet and see what you think is best. As for the blood you could agree on every other year or something if the vet wants to do yearly and you dont want to. Completely your choice but make an informed one

On the topic of vet costs... what are reasonable costs?

I was charged $220 by the local Small animals hospital recently.
The bird itself cost me $180. (And she was a beautiful hand-reared bird)

Of course, now that the bird is my companion, I'd try everything I can to keep her healthy, but at the risk of sounding like a cheapskate... what vet costs are reasonable?

I guess when both fids together are worth 3,100. Paying $500 annual for both exam is painless.

Depends what they did really. If it was just a physical exam with no tests then that is extortionate.

If they anethatised, took blood etc then it probably works out about average.

It cost me £180 to have exam, basic bloods and xray when Ollie got sick. which is currently about $283

A fully qualified avian vet will charge more.
