feather plucking?

Postby sophiajp123 » Mon Jul 02, 2012 4:56 pm

Hi guys,
I have a 19 week old parrotlet named Blu (short for Blueberry). Recently, when he is on my shoulder, I find 2-5 feathers left behind. I find him preening a lot. He is just starting to bathe, and the people who sold him to me told me that i should use a mild bath spray. His diet is seed and pellet. I try to give him fresh foods but he never seems interesed, but he really enjoys coconut as a treat. His cage a fairly large and he has plenty of toys to hang and chomp on. I really want my little Blu to stop his plucking. Please help me find his issue and find a solution. Thanks. :?

Does blu have bald or fluffy (down feather) spots? is he paying too much attention to just one area? he may just be moulting, im not sure when parrotlet moult tbh.
Also don't add anything to his bathing spray, some products can leave a film over the feathers which the bird can detect (even if we cant) and then they will overpreen to try to get rid of it.

As for the fresh foods, make it fun or enticing for him, hang it up on a kabob so it looks like a toy, eat it in front of him, cut it up smaller or larger, try cooking it or mashing it up. You can try offering him smaller amounts of the seed and pellets to encourage him but you will need to weigh him daily to make sure he isn't losing too much weight.

Because he is a baby he is still "fluffy". His bath spray has nothing added to it. He was snuggling into my stomach and after i checked if he had any bald spots. his chest feathers seem a little ruffled. Yet, I do not know if this is where he is plucking. Also, how should i hang fruit on a kabob and how? When i see him gnaw on his feathers, should i stop him? I really am confused and would love some answers because I love my bird as a child and want him to be okay.

sounds like a chewer like my mya :corella: the worst thing to do is give any attention whe he's chewing on his feathers. parrots love attention so if you ignore him when he's chewing he'll stop. sometimes there are medical reasons for chewing when i looked it up to find out why mya was doing it the causes were vitamin deficient, bordum,or being taken from parents too young to be hand fed.if he's a picky eater could be he's not getting proper nutrition so i would call my vet and ask about what you can give him until you can get him to eat properly.

At 19 weeks he shouldn't still have his down feathers showing. I think I would get a avian vet to take a look at him.

Thanks marie83. Before I thought about taking him to the vet, I showed my local avian stor and they said his down feathers are almost disapered. Thanks for the concern and help. His plucking is almost compleatly stopped thanks to the replies I have gotten. I ignore him when he does and because he only wants attention, he stops! I and getting him used to freash foods too. Ironicly, he loves bluberries!

your very welcome, when the rescue told me about mya :corella: she was bald from neck to tailfeathers and everything i read told me it was hopeless and she would always be the same. i had to decide if i could except a plucker and did as soon as i met her i would have taken her with no feathers. but with the help of this forum and improving her diet a year later she is 95% better.yours is still young so it should go faster for you.
