Hello everyone. I am new to this forum- having googled splayed legs and finding NO answers.
I just adopted a Blue & Gold Macaw from Florida Parrot Rescue with SEVERE splayed legs. He cannot walk, stand, or perch. It BREAKS my heart to see this. Obviously the breeder didn't care to correct this when he was born. He is at least 3 now (so they told me when I adopted him). He is so sad to watch.
I was told to not put any perches in his cage, and that he sleeps on a pillow placed at the bottom. I put 2 toys in there. The first 2 nights he didn't even really sleep but just hung on to the side of his cage. Last night he climbed on top of his cage & seemed comfortable so I let him stay there & he seemed to sleep up there resting his body on the top & turning his head to the side. I stayed on the couch all night so I could be near in case he fell, etc....
I plan on taking him to see my avian vet in the next couple of weeks & getting her opinion on his condition.
It's SO HARD to see this poor birdie get around and I am SO ANGRY at the breeder. He is so sad. I want to help him, but have NO idea what to do.
Any advice on cage set up....ANYTHING would be GREATLY APPRECIATED !!! He is so sweet !!!
