Hi, my cockatiel has been sneezing for the past couple days, and I'm starting to get worried. They started as maybe one to two sneezes a day. Now as he sits on my shoulder he has a bout of sneezing maybe 5 or 6 times in a row. Could this be allergies? Other than the sneezing, he is full of energy, yet still wanting to sleep I'm guessing because he is a baby? Any suggestions would be great!
He sneezes usually when he is on my shoulder. But I do feel the sneeze hit my neck like something wet. His nares appear to be fine? Again im still new to birds and don't know too much. O.O I also misted him with lukewarm water today to maybe help. I attached an image as best I could of his face.
Far as i can see from the pic the area looks normal. I'm not too sure tbh as I'm not really sure where i would put my limits as to what I would think was too much sneezing. A bit of sneezing and droplets is normal but if it's persistant or really frequent I'd make a trip to a vet to be on the safe side, especially if there is any sign of a runny nose. I would much rather be too cautious than not careful enough but If there is any wheezing what so ever definitely get that appointment made as soon as you can but not as an emergancy unless things change drastically.
My Tak sneezes a lot sometimes too, I got worried also and took him to his vet (a bird only doc), his vet checked him out and told me that he was lookin really good and that sometimes sneezing can become almost a habitual thing for them. The vet told me that as long as im careful not to expose Tak to harmful fumes and his nostril are clear I shouldn't be concerned about it. So that could be another possibility as to what's going on with your guy.
Parrots sneeze to clear their nostrils, just like we do. They will sneeze more during molting, because of feather dust, and also when they need a good bath.
If he's molting, you should increase bathing or misting to almost everyday for a while. If he's not, give him a good mist and follow-up at least once a week. Bathing is really important for a bird.
