Overstimulated Sun Conure

Postby Stephoklein » Sat Jul 28, 2012 8:37 am

Greetings Everyone,

I have a 6 year old sun conure who is definitely displaying sexual behavior. I have read suggestions to remove her or distract her by doing a trick to discourage the behavior. However, I was interested in what I can do about her diet? Any suggestions about what I could feed her or a schedule I could do to help with this? Thank you so much!!

I think overfeeding can contribute, birds don't tend to breed unless food is abundant. Also soft food makes better chick rearing food so try to avoid stuff like eggfood/mashes.

I don't know of anything else diet related but other people might.

Thank you! I am switching her to Harrison's and am going to lay back on the food, I was leaving her with food all day. I think your right, she was being overfed, for one thing!

Pellets tend to be high in nutrients and energy. I have found that by limiting pellets and giving more fresh foods instead of high energy pellet helps dramatically.

I read you shouldn't feed warmed food.

I've been having problems with hormonal behavior and i cut back on sugar from fruits and protein from nuts she eats Harrisons which is high in protein I've heard but I've heard it's healthy too. So I'm perplexed. I also try to change up her routine by bringing her to different places a bit and put her to bed early for a full eleven or twelve hours of sleep.

I think she's doing better!

Have you tried vegtables such as corn, broccoli, peas etc. Low on sugar, have nutrients and have less energy than pellets or fruits.

I tried broccoli and peas but she hasn't taken a shine yet. She will eat carrots and sweet potatoes. I continue to try with broccoli (every day both uncooked and cooked but refrigerated) but she throws them on the ground. Picky, picky! I may try corn since I need to go shopping soon anyway. She definitely doesn't have a wide enough array of foods she likes to switch away from pellets yet.

I have tried switching to Harrison's slowly, but I hate to say she was on colored pellets before, so it is proving most difficult as now she is hopped up on sugar. I have tried giving her vegetables. I have started with peas, corn, carrots, and green beans. I have cut off on fruits completely for now. I have noticed a difference, she has stopped trying to mate with my hand as much. I also started putting her to bed earlier, which seems to have made a difference with her screaming as well! Thanks so much for the advice! Everyone is so helpful!
