green cheek food question

Postby charmansky » Mon Jul 30, 2012 11:29 am

Hello everyone,
I'm feeding my green cheek a mix of beans, while grain rice and fruit and veggies. Zoey seems to pick the apple out right away, should I leave that out of her food and just use it as a treat?

Do you only feed that mix? If so then that is not really a proper diet, that mix should be fed as well, but you need to feed pellets.

I have a seed/pellet mix that I feed too and am starting to cut the seeds out all together.

That sounds ok in conjunction with the pellets. You might wish to swap the white rice for brown though. If your birds only picking out the apple you need to lessen the amount you feed or reserve it for treats only. Try not to give the apple every day as it will encourage your bird to eat other stuff too.

Oh right then that's a good, nutritious diet. Like Marie said, use brown rice because it is easier for them to digest and is more nutritious,

thanks!
another quick question...
Ive read quite a bit about breakfast and dinner feeding times. Well, I keep the pellet/seed mix as well as the veggie/bean/fruit mix in her cage all day long. Should I be doing his?

Its better not to keep fresh foods in for more than a few hours, its ok to leave seed, pellets or other dry foods in from a health/quality point of view.

If you are training or having difficulty getting your bird back in the cage you may wish to consider having meal times instead of free feeding.

Whichever way you choose make sure you weigh or measure the food before you put it in and when you take it out so you can detect any change in feeding habits early- it can tell you alot about your birds health.
