Is Olive Oil Ok For Birds?

Postby Scotty » Sun Aug 05, 2012 7:43 pm

Gudrun the owner of the TOPS pellets told me I should put a little olive oil in my birds water for them to drink.

Actually what I've done in the past is put in a little organic carrot juice, mixed with water and 2-3 drops of olive oil for both my GCC and Mynah...

What does everyone think about Olive Oil?

Later I'd like to use Hemp Seed Oil, I know this should be good...

My GCC loves to eat organic ground up hemp seeds I get at the health store...

THANKS

I dont know about those oils[but Ive always heard coconut oil and red palm oil] Dont put that in their water but in their food.I had inquired about this to my vet so I know these are safe. I had also thought about putting it their water but was told never put anything in thier water :D

Teeny tiny amounts of olive oil is ok but like Terri said put a drop on their food rather than in their water. I would reduce how much and how often you give it too. Oils are full of fat and although good fats are needed in the diet there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. One or two drops on food 1-2 times per week should be more than enough if you still want to give them some.

Yes, I've read what Marie says about olive oil... I have given a little olive oil to Tiki on her toast, but not much. I focus on Coconut oil, because I've also read that Coconut oil is good for birds relating to their skin... I give Tiki a tiny bit once a week to prevent dry skin.

Ok I think but make sure you rotate your oils/coconut water rather than give all at once otherwise their diets going to be way too high in fat.
